    Happy Thursday!

Students are excited to have a three-day weekend with our teacher in-service tomorrow. This is our first professional development day since school has started, and I am looking forward to learning how to individualize Iready (math app) for each student.

Our new fundraiser is starting, and it all has to do with dance!  Students watched a quick preview yesterday and I included a flyer in Friday folders.  Students have a chance to win prizes, and I will have class incentives for pledges made for our class.  We are fundraising for a school reader board if you choose to participate.

We have had a great week full of math and science.  We completed a big science experiment this morning on how water changes landscapes.  We become so involved in the experiment that I forgot to take pictures to send out.  Sorry!  We have another experiment next week, and I hope to be able to take pictures then.

    Have a great weekend!

    Happy Friday!

It’s been a busy back to school week.  I will say we had a bit of a rough start with acclimating back to being in school after out for a week.  There were many tired students along with me on Monday!

We started a new science unit this week on how water and erosion work.  On Thursday we completed a science experiment on how water comes down mountains as rivers.  The pictures I emailed are ones I took of the class during the science experiment outside.

Friday folders are full of student activities.  In addition, there is a Boise Hawks reading form.  If your child chooses to read and complete the form, they can receive a Boise Hawks ticket.  All the information is in the packet.  I am also including school pictures that several students purchased.  I love how our class picture turned out!

Next week is a short week with a teacher in-service day on Friday.  Due to the short week, we will not be having reading centers.  2nd grade has chosen to continue working on homophones and the homework packet reflects this.

I am attaching a flyer for Young Rembrandts.  This is an art program that is offered after school at Pleasant View.  I believe you might have received this flyer already through Peach Jar, but I have had students ask me about it, so I am attaching.

    Have a great weekend!

    Happy Friday!

There are a few flyers from the PTA in Friday Folders today.  There are also a lot of different practice and evidence pieces this week in your child’s folder.  Grades from last week along with a few grades from this week are updated in PowerSchool.  I still have a few evidence pieces from this week to assess.  Those will be entered in PowerSchool by next Wednesday.

We finished narrative writing this week and will be moving into informational writing.  This is one of my favorite writing units to teach because students get to research landforms and animals to “publish” their writing.

Next week is all about dressing up!  Please look in the Pronghorn Post to see the theme for each day.

2nd grade has included information in our newsletter about masks, but I also wanted to include in my email.  Masks are still required in school even with the Ada County mask mandate being lifted.  Masks are part of our pandemic plan and dress code for this school year and students and staff will continue to need to wear for this school year.  Please make sure you are continuing to send your child to school with a mask.  Thank you for continuing to help keep students and staff in school.

    Have a great weekend!

    Happy Friday!

We have been enjoying the wonderful, warm, sunny weather in 2nd grade this week.  It has a bit hard for all of us to come in from recess the last few days even with the wind today!

Today students learned about M.C. Escher, an artist from the Netherlands and worked on an art project based on his work.  While students have asked to take their art home, I am going to display it in the hall until spring break.

Next week we will be wrapping up our narrative writing unit.  Our last activity will be an emoji writing.  Students have already picked out the “pack” of emojis they would like to design a story around and we will be completing next week.  This is always a fun writing activity, and I am looking forward to reading the creative stories.

    Have a great weekend!

    Happy Friday!

Friday folders are brimming with student work this week.  Any activities I use as evidence pieces have a number circled on them.  Please remember that a 3 is considered proficient by the end of the school year with a 2.5 meaning your child has a good chunk of the level 3 knowledge but is not consistent.  If your child has a 2 or below, I write notes on the activities as to why I gave that certain score.  I tend to do this on many 2.5 activities as well especially in writing.

Class pictures are on Tuesday, March 2nd.  Your child has a specific picture form in his/her Friday folder.  All pictures are REQUIRED to be purchased online if you choose to order pictures.  Please see the note for more information.

    Have a great weekend!

    Happy Friday!

We have had a great week in 2nd grade, but today takes the cake!  Students completed an African mask art activity after learning about different countries in Africa this week.  They will be bringing home their masks today.  In addition, students were treated to different foods from Mexico and Germany.  I was unable to find any store-bought items to introduce students to African food.  Students had the opportunity to try a Mexican pastry and Nopalitos (grilled cactus) from Mexico.  From Germany, students could try red cabbage, sauerkraut, butter biscuits, and Bavarian pretzels.  All items were store bought due to COVID.

I would like to express my appreciation to you.  Since 2nd grade implemented spelling activities for homework each week most of the class has been completing and returning the packet.  Thank you!  Many students complete the packet over the weekend and return on Monday with others being returned throughout the week.  The packet is not due until Fridays so please keep in mind that students do not need to work on all at one time unless you choose for that to happen.

As a reminder, please have your child charge his/her laptop at home each night.  I have had many students with dead batteries this week, and I do not have a large area to charge laptops.  This is especially true when students need to work on laptops and must stand at the counter because of outlets.

    Have a great weekend!

    Happy Friday!

Attached is our weekly 2nd grade newsletter with important dates and information.  Our Canned Food Drive starts on Monday, February 8th.  The top three classes that bring in the most food will be given a party.  If you are able and would like to, I would love to see how many cans our classroom can contribute for “Kindness” month.

Our 2nd spelling packet is coming home in folders today.  Most students completed and returned packets this week.  If your child did not return his/her packet, that is okay!  It was the first week and a new process!  We are tracking packets in each classroom for different incentives.

    Have a great weekend!

    Happy Friday!

Students are coming home full of energy today!  With all the rain, we have been inside all day except for the first few minutes of morning recess.  They are currently in PE so hopefully this will help a bit with the energy level.

Semester 1 grades are finalized in PowerSchool.  Report cards will not be sent home this year, and they will also not be activated for printing out of PowerSchool until the end of the school year.  You can see how your child is currently doing in PowerSchool.  Please keep in mind that I am assessing to the end of the year proficiency scale.  Reading, writing, and math concepts will continue to be reviewed and practiced for students to work towards mastery.

If your child had an IRI Intervention plan from the fall, there will be a progress report in today’s Friday folder.  Some students are exiting the IRI intervention system; however, they will continue to receive interventions/enrichment at their current level.

With the start of the 2nd semester, 2nd grade is implementing a new program to help students practice spelling.  Each child will have a spelling packet in his/her Friday folder today along with a note explaining what we are doing and why.  A proficiency scale for spelling is included in the letter and there will be incentives for students who complete the spelling activities and return them to school.

A Valentine list is coming home in Friday folders, and I have also attached one to this email.  Sending in Valentines is completely voluntary, but I do ask if they are sent in that there is one for every student in the class.  With COVID restrictions, all Valentines will need to be individually packaged if candy/treats are included.  Students will not be allowed to open the Valentines, but they will decorate a bag in class to hold all their treasures to bring home.

    Have a great weekend!

    Happy Friday!

Students have completed several different assessments this week that help determine intervention and enrichment groups for students based on individual needs.  To celebrate, we started our first big art project where we learned about at an artist before completing an art activity based on his work.  The plus to this activity…our artist is local!  We looked at Daniel Borup who is from Meridian and has taught art in Shelley, Idaho.

There are two math quizzes coming home this week.  On quiz #1, the highest score students could earn was a 2 on NBT.B (adding/subtracting).  Students were only working with 2-digit numbers on this quiz and our standard is for 3-digit numbers up to 1000.  If your child received a 1.5 instead of the 2, there is an individualized note in PowerSchool as to why I gave the 1.5.  On quiz #2, students could earn a 3 on NBT.B (adding/subtracting) because there were two 3-digit problems; however, I want you to be aware this quiz only assessed addition and the sums were closer to 200 than 1000.  You might see a decrease in scores on the next few quizzes as subtraction will start to be assessed in more depth.  Students tend to struggle more with subtraction than addition.

Students also started their first math tracking in the classroom this week with our “Story Problem Ladder.”  Students will be tracking how well they are doing working with story problems by using the ladder to determine where they are individually in their story problem set up and solving.

    Have a great weekend!

    Happy Friday!

Next week is our winter benchmark week where students will complete different assessments to measure academic growth from the fall on different standards.  A few of these tests are completed orally with a teacher or interventionist.  The other two are completed on the computer.  Please make sure your child’s laptop is fully charged and ready to use each day in the classroom.  I have been having several students come in since Christmas break without their laptops charged.  Students are unable to charge laptops at their desks, and I only have so many outlets to charge laptops.  When this is happening, students must stand up at the counter to use their laptop.

We have started two more science experiments this week where students are observing and recording data on the experiments.  It all involves growing plants!  You might ask your child about how our radishes are growing, and will they grow in different circumstances.

As a reminder, tonight is Pleasant View’s fundraiser night at Panda Express.  You will need the flyer or online code on the flyer for PVE to receive part of the sale if you choose to participate.  I sent home the flyers on Wednesday.  Also, there is no school on Monday for observance of Martin Luther King, Jr.’s birthday.

    Have a great three-day weekend!
