Mr. John Pattis

Welcome to our class website.  I hope you are ready for a tremendous learning adventure.  I spent part of this past summer at workshops, perfecting my teaching craft.  I also spent many days on Grandpa Duty.  There was a lot of time for yard work, and a few fishing expeditions.  Some of the time I got skunked, but most of the time I was able to catch and release my worthy opponent- The Rainbow Trout.

I've lived in Idaho off and on for most of my life.  As a member of an Army family, my home was my grandfather's in Pocatello.  That is where we spent most of our summers.  It was only logical that after finishing high school, I attended Idaho State University graduating in 1975 with a degree in Business, and a commission in the US Army.

Twenty-two  years of great times followed, with assignments in Europe, Alaska, the US, and a participation in Operation Desert Storm.   While in the army I mentored some fine young officers who eventually rose to the highest levels of leadership.   When I wasn't on a tank, I was teaching tactics and decision making.   After retiring, I wanted to continue to work with fine young people.  Eventually ending up at BSU in the College of Education.  Humbling is to return to college and make up for some liberal arts classes missing from my background.     After BSU I started teaching fifth grade, and middle school.   In 2006 I came to Eagle Hills,   I love this school.    There are students enrolled here who are children of students I taught early in my career.   I often meet former students who have now moved on and are making a difference in their world.  Life goes in one big circle.

I am a life-long learner  that fully embraces the growth mindset and want my students  to become the same.  Our classroom is one of give and take, share and grow.  Fifth graders are almost ready to undertake the challenges of middle school.

One of my passions is  after school Idaho Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics (ISTEM) camps.  Here students study rocketry, robotics, chess, drones, and things that go boom. Watch for postings in the school newsletter.

When not teaching you might find me volunteering at the City Light shelter for Women and Children, walking, gardening, fishing, being a grandpa, or visiting family.  I am a pretty good cook, and like to watch college football, or old westerns.
I am excited about the teaching, and hope my excitement shows in everything we do, every day.
