Welcome to Honors English 9! This course is designed to engage you as a critical and thoughtful reader, writer and thinker - not just in your English class, but in your other subjects and in your life outside school. This course features literary works, and a variety of non-narrative texts to develop the critical thinking necessary for any subject or circumstance both in the classroom and in life. This course is designed specifically to prepare our students for the rigors of the International Baccalaureate (IB) and the Associate of Arts (AA) Program offered here at Renaissance High School.
This class, in conjunction with Honors English 10 will meet the state speech requirement for graduation. As a result, you will be required to present on more than one occasion to several different audiences.
As part of this class, students will (1) Think deeply, (2) Read widely, and (3) Articulate their thinking in both oral and written discussion.
The focus of Freshmen Honors English is centered on the essential questions of “What do I believe and why do I believe it?” In doing so, we will be studying a variety of works in all genres from all over the world. Units of study are planned as strands of the essential question.
