    News from Ms. Manley’s Class

    August 27, 2021

Welcome to 5th Grade! As we all know this year is going to be a bit different than most years, but very close to last year. Our 5th grade team is working hard to make sure we are making it as close to a “normal” year as we can. We have high expectations for our students, and we will continue to teach our 5th grade standards as well as making sure students are filling in any gaps. We acknowledge learning through technology can be difficult and are ready to help our 5th graders transition into independent learners ready for middle school. We do have due dates and grades will be in Power School, but if your child is struggling at home with the lessons or technology, please don’t hesitate to contact me.

5th Grade – This is the year we stive to make 5th graders independent learners ready to go to middle school. Students will have the responsibility for their assignments and successes. We will walk them through and help them step by step. Toward the end of they year they will be expected to be more independent and capable of advocating for themselves.

Equipment – Each student has a school laptop issued to them with a power cord and a case. At the end of the year, all will need to be returned. Remind your 5th grader the importance of keeping their equipment safe. Best practices: No food or drink near the computer and always carry it with two hands.  When coming to school place it in the case for protection. PLEASE CHARGE COMPUTERS at home every night, so they can use them during the day.

Supplies – Every student will need to have their own pair of earbuds or headsets. All supplies for the near future that are not in their desks, will need to be in their backpacks. Cubbies will be assigned, but need to be cleared out at the end of every day.

Water – Fountains are for filling up water bottles, please make sure your student has a water bottle to fill.

Planners – Planners will go home every day filled out. Please sign the bottom.

Blue Folders – Blue Folders are going to be our important paper folder and Homework Folder (unless you child wants a different folder for schoolwork). Any incomplete work will be in the Blue Folder/Homework Folder. Any work not finished in class will need to be finished at home.

Power Schools – As we progress the next few weeks, grades will be entered into Power Schools. We request parents to view Power Schools with your student. Students will also know how to go on and check themselves. The important icon will be the Missing Assignment icon. In future newsletters, I’ll give you directions on how to find them and what to look for. Missing Assignments will also be posted in their online class notebook.

Newsletters – Watch the newsletters for important information on activities and assignments for our class. I will be sending our Newsletters on a weekly basis.  Usually on Thursdays, but as this school year is quite different, that may change to a different day. They will also be posted on our class website. You can access that by going to the West Ada School District Site, Select Desert Sage under schools, click on Teachers and Staff, click on Manley, Deanna, then on Newsletters.

Contact – If you have any questions or concerns please feel free to contact me via e-mail manley.deanna@westada.org or phone 350-4020.  Please allow 24 hours to get back in touch with you.  Sometimes I have meetings before, during, and after school and cannot reply until the next day.
