Mission to Mars
Fifth graders will undertake a Mission to Mars activity to create a habitable Martian base in their space exploration unit. Students will investigate the physical characteristics of Mars to better understand the challenges of exploring, building, and living on the planet surface. In specialized teams, they will design a specific component of the Mars base. Bringing real-world application to the project, students will use math skills to calculate the perimeter, area, and volume of their component. In addition, they will create a small-scale blue print of their component's floor plan. Using their writing skills, each specialized team will write a descriptive narrative to share all the details of their unique Martian habitat.
