English Language Arts 7 is a blocked class that includes a period of Writing and Composition and a period of Literature and Strategies each day. In these classes, we focus on developing four essential communication skills: reading, writing, listening, and speaking.
Students are responsible for making up any work missed due to absence. Please check the calendar on this website or in class to see what you missed and get any assignments you need from the assignments section of the website or the extra copies binder in class. After you have followed those steps, please feel free to ask me any questions you have.
Grade categories are weighted as follows:
Sawtooth Middle is moving toward standards-based grading, and the ELA 7 team has decided to move forward with this approach and base students’ grades 100% on assessments. That doesn’t mean that the only scores in the grade book will be big tests—anything that represents student learning after instruction and practice will be eligible for a grade. We believe that this will place the emphasis on learning and mastery of the material. We do not want students to be penalized for not having mastered a concept while we are still learning and practicing it. Of course, I will still review and offer feedback on practice work so students can celebrate their strengths and improve their skills.
If you are concerned about your grade, please talk to me or send an email, you are welcome to redo assignments or retake assessments until the quarter cut-off date.
I am available to provide extra help to students who need it before school, at break, and after school. Please let me know if you need help, and we will figure out a time that works for our schedules.
