    Wax Museum was a SUCCESS!!

    The students worked hard in the classroom, as well as several worked at home, in preparation for our Wax Museum. THANK YOU all that were able to attend! I captured pictures of the students and added them to the website. I have also updated all albums on the class website, so you can now see so many events and things that we have done this year!!  

    Field Day – Wednesday

    Our rescheduled time for field day is 11:05-12:05. I would love to have a couple of volunteers. Email me if you would like to come play with the students and help keep the events flowing. NO SWIMMING SUITS or white t-shirts for girls. Students may bring a change of clothes.  

    5th Grade BBQ at Hunter Park - May 28th

    Our BBQ is scheduled for Tuesday, May 28th. Our class moms have been planning the event and we are so grateful. If you do signed up, please send any last minute items first thing Tuesday. We will be walking to Hunter’s Creek Park for the day, we will clean up and walk back about 2:30.!

    ISAT
    We survived ISAT! The students did really well with goal setting and perseverance!! We are so excited with our overall class results. Look in your mail, in early June, to see how your student performed.

    Field Trip to Star Middle School - MONDAY!
    Can you believe we are down the end of 5th grade! In order to prepare for the transition the students are about to face, we will be taking a day-long field trip to Star Middle, where the students will experience life as a 6th grader. We are going to Star Middle School on Monday 5/20/19, leaving at 9:10 and returning at 2:30. We have a schedule planned for the day with tours and information about what they will experience next year.
    Parents are not invited to this trip, it is for the students only.

    Wax Museum - WEDNESDAY!
    The students have been working hard in the classroom in preparation for our Wax Museum on Wednesday, May 22nd 9:45-10:45.
    Please come anytime during the hour to visit our Living Wax Museum! Any friends or other family are welcome as well.
    Your student should come to school IN COSTUME, with PROP READY, and speech memorized.
    They should also bring a change of clothes for after the museum.

    Homework

    Due to ISAT testing, I will not be assigning homework this week. Instead, I am expecting students to be focused on rocking the last round of ISAT on Wednesday. I also expect that they are following along with the due dates for in preparation for the wax museum.

    THANK YOU to the parents that brought in the motivational treats!! A little boost will be a great way to start out our testing season!

     

    Due to ISAT testing, I will not be assigning homework this week. Instead, I am expecting students to be outside getting fresh air and exercise! It is important that students are well rested and get to school on time! School starts at 9:05 and testing needs to start as soon as possible to give students as much time as possible to show what they know!!

     

    Book orders are due April 26th

     

    ISAT STARTS TOMORROW!!

    ISAT testing will start in about 3 weeks. These tests are a way for students to show that they have learned and mastered the 5th Grade Standards to the best of their ability. This is a great opportunity for students to show how they have grown since 4th Grade and throughout 5th Grade!

    Students will take 5 tests-

    • SCIENCE TUESDAY 4/23
    • ELA PT (Performance Test) WEDNESDAY 4/24

    Student will read 2-3 sources, answer questions, and write an essay in response to a prompt.

    • ELA CAT This is a multi-skill test that covers the skills and strategies taught and practiced throughout the entire year.
    • Math PT (Performance Task) This is a multi-step, multi-skill, word problem style test.
    • Math CAT This is a multi-standard test, focused on testing all content areas taught in 5th

    Happy Friday-Lots of information is packed into this newsletter!!

    Thank you to all the parent support for the Valentine’s Party. Having your help and donations are so helpful to guarantee the students enjoyed their holiday!

    Star Middle School Registration Packets - DUE back March 1st

    Today, the students attended an assembly by Star Middle School Music Department. The students were introduced to of their music options for next year. The counselor answered questions for the students. Today, I am sending home a registration packet for next year, and it is due back on March 1st.

    *If you are not sure where your student is attending next year, still fill out the registration packet and return by March 1st. 

    ART to Remember Fundraiser

    Art to remember flier is coming home today. The students created a fun, abstract piece of artwork that will be used for this fundraiser. Look for more information soon.

    ISAT Practice

    We have started taking Interim Practice ISAT tests to prepare for ISAT. The purpose is the build stamina and to learn testing strategies.

    Snow School -

    Wow! Snow School is only a few weeks away! We will be riding a bus to Bogus Basin Ski Resort on Monday, March 18th. We will leave promptly at 9:05 and return shortly before the end of the day at 3:55. Students and volunteers will snow shoe, stopping for science stations along the way. Students should be prepared with snow gear (pants, boots, gloves, hats, sun screen), sack lunch and water bottle that day. *They do, however, have extra pants, boots, and gloves if needed, so please don't feel like you need to go purchase anything. 

    VOLUNTEERS ARE NEEDED. I have 5 parents that have volunteered so far. If you would like to volunteer that day, you will be snowshoeing through the snow with a group of 8-9 kids with the Bogus Basin Instructor. There will most likely be room on the bus if you'd like to ride with the class, but you can drive yourself if desired. 

    Earth Layers Project

    Students have been assigned an AT HOME project to create a model of the earth showing each of the layers, continents, and plate tectonics. The assignment page has gone home, and your signature acknowledging the project must be returned by Tuesday, February 26th. All but 3 students have returned the signed slip. All students have the direction page and rubric.

    The project is DUE Tuesday, March 5th and will be presented to the class. Click here to view the requirements for the assignment.

    Class News-

    We are officially in the 2nd Semester! Our class has accomplished a lot this year with so much more left to do. There has been so much growth across the classroom. Report Cards were posted last week. Report cards will be live on Power School. Paper copies of report cards are NOT sent home, they are only digital. If you have any questions with grades posted, let me know. If you have any issues logging into PowerSchool, contact the district for technical support.

    Snow School

    Save the Date-

    The last few years, 5th Grade has taken a field trip to Bogus Basin for Snowshoeing and Ecology Science. The experience is educational, as well as an opportunity to work on  team building. This year, our class will be going on Monday, March 18th. We will need about 5 volunteers that will be willing to lead a group of 4-6 students with the Bogus Basin guide. More information will be coming.

    DWA Results 

    I was overall impressed with the results for an end of the year assessment, given mid-year! I will be conferencing with students over the next week, sharing their results (grows & glows)! Results were posted in PowerSchool under Informational Essay.

    I will be conferencing and goal setting with students about ISAT results from last year and what they think they can accomplish this year. We will be completing ISAT interim practice tests on Mondays for the next few weeks, so students will be familiar with formatting and build stamina.

    Spirit Wear Order

    We are proud Star Stallions and if you need new Spirit Wear to show your spirit, Click here to view the order form to order Star Stallion shirts and sweatshirts. Orders due by Monday, February 4th. These order forms were also sent home Friday.

    Roaring Readers

    Writing: Narrative Writing - A plane ticket mix up! Write a story about a traveler arriving in Athens, Greece rather than Athens, Georgia. We will be going through the writing process in class. Final Copy will be due February 1st.

    Wow! Can you believe it is already December!! We have a busy but fun three weeks before our Winter Break. I am so proud of the hard work most the kids have been showing off over the past few weeks! Our #1 goal is to show growth and it is showing throughout the class!!

     

    Food Drive

      Star Elementary will be holding a food drive benefiting Star Outreach.  We will be collecting items from November 26th-December 21st.  The most needed items are:

    Tuna, Pasta Sauce, Canned fruit/vegetables, Soups, Pasta, Bar Soap, Toilet Paper

    Star Outreach also coordinates help for the Holidays through their "Adopt-A-Family" program.  If you, or someone you know, are in need of help for the Holidays, you may sign-up at the library on November 15th and November 29th.  

     

    Book Orders 

           Last book order before Christmas Break is due by December 7th. I just sent home the    flyers yesterday. There are lots to choose from and even more online.     Book Fair is NEXT WEEK! November 5-9

    Come visit the Star Elementary Library during the book fair!  All proceeds benefit our school library.  Students may visit the book fair during recess if they have money with them.

    THANK YOU for attending our Open House. It was such a great turn out. 

    Homework Reminder - 

    We will have nightly homework, which can be done within 25-30 minutes each night. (My class is doing really well with completing our reading logs nightly and fully, but a few are still straggling.)

    ◦Reading - For 20 minutes, students will read a book AT THEIR LEVEL and then complete a written response in their reading log. Reading log is due every Friday and will be posted for a grade on randomly chosen weeks.

    ◦Word Study - Study spelling or greek and latin words nightly. (Spelling and Greek and Latin words will alternate weekly). Word study will not be collected, it is up to the student to know their words by every Friday and be prepared for the quizzes.

    •   Math (optional) - khanacademy.org is a great resource for reviewing concepts we are learning as well as enrichment to beyond. All students have their log ins in their agendas. 

    ◦Unfinished work - Any unfinished classwork will also be homework, assuming it is due the next day. Once in a while, there will be at-home, larger projects.

    I hope you enjoyed your long weekend! Last week was a great week of figuring out our routines and expectations. I have learned a lot about my students and working with their strengths and weaknesses

    Homework – READING LOGS

    We had a bumpy start but all except 2 turned it in on Friday. Most students completed at lease 3 days. Remember when you check them, I am expecting correct grammar, complete sentences, and to have them use up the lines 

    Through homework, we are teaching responsibility, time management, and reading skills. Please let me know if there are any concerns you are having with homework.

    Open House - Wednesday, September 12th 6-7:30.

    REMINDERS-

    School Drop Off/ Pick Up Times - There has been some confusion about when to drop off and pick up students on certain days. M, T, TH, F no earlier than 8:45 am. Wed. is late start.

    Phones & Smart Watches – Need to be powered off and put in their backpack. There is no texting during school hours.

    Gum – There is no gum on the playground or in the classrooms. Unfortunately, we have found chewed up gum on the playground and stuck in the carpets in the classrooms, so we have to say No Gum.

    Welcome Back to what will be an amazing year - and your students' last year in elementary school. I have had a great week getting to know your kids and learning about their strengths and weaknesses.

    Classroom Policies & Info - a packet with some information went home on Wednesday. Thank you for sending the signed form back to me. If you have not, please sign the last page, returning the signed slip by Monday, August 27th. Please email me with any questions you may have.

    Classroom Materials- Some students are in need of a few classroom materials. Please gather these by Monday or let me know if your student will not be able to bring certain things in to school. I have some supplies, but I need communication what what they need ahead of time so I can gather them.

    Newsletter - Emailed and posted to my website most Fridays. Please bookmark this page, as you may want to refer to it often for dates and assignment information.     SAVE THE DATE 9/12/18 OPEN HOUSE - Scheduled for Wednesday, September 12th 6-7:30. This will be an OPEN HOUSE STYLE where you can come to your student's grade level at any time during that block. Expect to spend about 15-30 minutes at your student's grade level. Parents will learn about what we teach, how we teach it, and how to help at home. We will be discussing Math, Literacy, and How to access PowerSchool to see grades.
