My name is Yana Maxwell and, pending Board approval, I will be the Girls
Varsity Head Coach at Meridian High School for the 2019 year! I am elated
to have the opportunity to build this program and help facilitate a positive
playing experience for the girls that encourages growth, competition, and
a love for the game!

A little background on myself -- I am the mother of two fantastic children,
Max (age 4) and Vallencia (age 5). I grew up in Meridian, and am actually
a graduate of Meridian High School. I played Varsity at MHS for three
years while concurrently playing club soccer in Boise. During my senior
year of high school, I began coaching as an assistant at Boise Nationals
and continued coaching while attending college. I have two bachelor’s
degrees: One in Business Administration and one in Accounting from
Northwest Nazarene University. My first Head Coaching job was at Bishop
Kelly High School where I was the JV Head Coach from 2010-2015 (minus
2013 when I had my daughter and worked as an Assistant Coach). During
that time we won three 4A JV District Championships and two 4A JV
District Finalists. I was also awarded Coach of the Year in 2015.
Concurrently, and following my time at BK, I started coaching club at
Meridian United 2014-2015 as the Head Coach of the U15G, and then went
back to Boise Nationals (2015-2018) where I coached U12G & U9G (2015-
16), U10G (2016-17), and then became U10-U12 Girls Director of Coaching
(2017-18) where I coached the U10G & U11G age groups that were
composed of over 40 players and four separate teams.
Hello Players and Families of the Meridian High School Girls
Soccer Program!

My time at Nationals gave me experience in managing players, running large practices,
communicating with parents, building teams and friendships, and organizing my coaching staff for
practices, weekend games, and tournaments. I have taken the last year off for personal reasons in
order to spend more time with my children and have decided dive back into coaching! Overall, I have
over 10 years of coaching experience, additionally, I hold my US Soccer Federation (USSF) “E”, “D”, “C”,
& “B” licenses and a USSF National Youth License.

In all my years of coaching, I found the best way for players to learn and promote creativity has been
through self-guided training. This simply means letting players play the game of soccer while the
coach asks guided questions to the players about what they see, what they believe are solutions to
problems placed in front of them, and what they can do to fix it, thus, allowing the game to be the
teacher. One of the best consequences of this type of training is that it is more fun for players. Kids
play soccer, to play soccer. Yes, I appreciate the fact that this is an oversimplification, but as simple as
it is, it is often a fact that is overlooked through all the club fees, wins, losses, tournaments, games,
travel, tryouts, making varsity or JV, playing position, obtaining college scholarships, etc. A quote that
I constantly use as a coach, and has formed my coaching philosophy, is from Mia Hamm:
“Somewhere behind the athlete you've become and the hours of practice and the coaches
who have pushed you is a little girl who fell in love with the game and never looked back...
play for her.” I have personally been the victim of poor coaching during my youth and it is one of my goals as a
coach to change the cycle. To learn more about my personal youth experiences, and my coaching
philosophy, I encourage you to read an old blog post I wrote for my 2007G a couple years ago
entitled "Why I Quit Soccer": https://ymaxwell22.wixsite.com/2007thorns/singlepost/

Parents and Families, thank you for entrusting me with your daughter this High School season.
Players, thank you for letting me be your coach, I will honestly learn more from you than you will
from me, and I look forward to meeting every single one of you.
GO WARRIORS!
