ELD Program Models

Newcomers

  • Students who are new to the country within two years and are at the beginning levels of English receive additional classes in English as well as content classes taught by a certified English Language teacher.

Sheltered Content Instruction

  • Students at the Newcomer centers at Centennial High or Lewis and Clark Middle receive some of their content instruction (i.e. math, science, social studies) by an endorsed English as a New Language certified teacher.

Mainstream English

  • Students who have proficiency scores above 4.0 on the Access 2.0 receive their instruction by a mainstream general education teacher. These students have English Language Plans that are monitored by the EL case manager at the school.

English Language Development

  • Students who have proficiency scores below a 4.0 on the Access 2.0 receive additional Core English classes taught by a certified teacher endorsed in English as a New Language.
