Assessing with a System:

  • Assessing with a System:

According to the authors of Intentional and Targeted Teaching, "any assessment system that values measuring and evaluating students over informing learning and teaching is doomed to fail."  Also, "the ability to leverage assessment for the purposes of learning, not just measurement, represents excellence in the profession." Assessing with a System has three criteria:

    1. Assessment to Support Learners pg. 116:  Involves clearly communicated comprehensible learning outcomes/expectations and goal setting
    2. Assessment to Monitor Learning pg. 122:  Develop a system to gather data through periodic checks for understanding and analyze the errors students make to see what adaptations need to be made
    3. Assessment to Inform Learning pg. 132:  Involves using various forms of feedback.  Learning intentions are critical.
