Degrees and Certifications:
Mrs. Julie Summers
Welcome to Heritage and 6th grade math for 2020-2021! This will be my 30th year teaching and could possibly be the most interesting and intriguing one yet. I have taken many classes this summer and worked alongside other educators to prepare myself for whatever challenges we have in front of us. This is going to be a great and memorable year! As 6th graders, it will definitely be an exciting year as you navigate the whole new world of middle school. I taught elementary school for 26 years, so I know how fun it is to make that middle school transition.
I am one of those rare Idaho natives. I attended Boise schools and graduated from Borah High School. I received my degree in education from Boise State University. I have taught for 29 years in the West Ada School District, with most of my time spent in elementary school, teaching 2nd, 4th and 5th grade. However, 3 years ago I left Paramount Elementary and moved to Heritage. I feel like I am exactly where I am supposed to be. No matter what level I taught, my favorite subject to teach was always math. Therefore, it seemed like a great idea to move to middle school and teach my favorite subject all day every day. I know that math can be an intimidating subject for a lot of students. It is my goal to give all students skills and problem solving strategies to navigate through the math curriculum, and to apply those skills to their real lives.
A few random facts about me:
-My husband, Jock Summers, also teaches here at Heritage. He teaches World Civilazations across the hallway. I feel blessed to be able to work to with my husband and share our love and passion for teaching.
-We have three girls - Kara, Kendal and Kristen - all of whom attended Heritage Middle.
-We are Disneyland fanatics. We take a vacation to "The Happiest Place on Earth" every summer as soon as school gets out. This year we weren't able to go, but we are already looking forward to our next trip.
-My husband and I coordinate Rendezvous, a 4th grade history field trip, for the West Ada School District. We put over 3,000 students through 40+ hands-on history stations. We have done this for 25 years and will be turning over the reigns to others after this year.
-In my spare time I enjoy reading, shopping at thrift stores and hanging out at coffee shops with friends.
