Mrs. Renee Higbee

Hello! I'm incredibly excited to start my first year teaching American Sign Language courses at OHS. I have 20 years of experience in the field of Deaf Education as an educator, advocate, and sign language interpreter. My experience with ASL/Deaf Culture is mixed with professional and personal experience ranging from teaching ASL courses at BSU and ISU, interpreting in K-12 education settings, collegiate interpreting, religious/community interpreting, to working as the Parent/Familiy Liaison for the Idaho Educational Services for the Deaf and Blind. I hold two degrees, a BS in Educational Interpreting from Idaho State University and a BA in Humanities from Washington State University. Currently, I am working on my M.Ed in Curriculum and Instruction through the University of Idaho and proud to label myself as a life-long-learner!

Personally, I am passionate about teaching and advocating, as I have the privilege of raising a son who is profoundly deaf, uses a cochlear implant, and we sign as a family. Navigating support services through K-12 public education and the collegiate academic setting through understanding/applying the Americans with Disabilities Act, has been an honor the past 20 years. My husband Doug and I have been married for 23 years and have two wonderful children. Both of our children attend the University of Idaho. Go, Vandals! In my spare time, I enjoy running, hiking/camping/backpacking in the Sawtooth mountains and paddleboarding.
