    Unit topics:

    Heartsaver First Aid

    Basic Life support


    In this unit students will learn the basic components of first aid.  A significant aspect of this unit till entail breaking down medical terminology to identify roots prefixes, suffixes and abbreviations.  Students will identify medical and environmental emergencies and will learn how to provide basic care for each type of emergency.  Within each aspect of this unit students will learn basic anatomy to correspond with specific types of emergency care



    In this unit students will learn Basic Life Support (BLS), cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) with Automated External Defibrillator (AED).  A significant aspect of this unit will entail breaking down medical terminology to identify roots, prefixes, suffixes and abbreviations.  Students will identify cardiovascular emergencies and how to activate the chain of survival.  Within each aspect of this unit students will learn basic anatomy to correspond with specific types of emergency care.

    Learning Objectives

    At the end of the Heartsaver First Aid Course students will be able to:

    ·        List the priorities, roles and responsibilities of first aid rescuers

    ·        Describe the key steps in first aid

    ·        Describe the assessment and first aid actions for the following life-threatening conditions: heart attack, difficulty breathing, choking, severe bleeding, shock and stroke

    ·        Recognize elements of common injuries and illnesses

    ·        Describe how to find information on preventing illness and injury

    ·        Recognize the legal questions that apply to first aid rescuers

    At the end of the Basic Life Support Course student will be able to:

    ·        Describe the importance of high=quality CPR and its impact on survival

    ·        Describe and apply all the steps of the Chain of Survival

    ·        Recognize the signs of someone needing CPR

    ·        Perform high-quality CPR for an adult, child and infant

    ·        Describe the importance of early use of an automated external defibrillator (AED)

    ·        Provide effective ventilation by using a barrier device

    ·        Describe the importance of teams in multi-rescuer resuscitation

    ·        Describe and perform the technique for relief of foreign-body airway obstruction for an adult or child

    Foundations in Emergency Care is an interactive course.  It is video-based learning with the use of scenarios and practice while watching format.  Students will practice skills as the video guides them as well as following along in their student handbook


    Format: At the beginning of each class, students will set the room up in a horse-shoe shape and get tool kits out. Class will consist of reviewing of materials (using Quizlet), short lectures, hand-on skills, LAB skill sheets, video-based learning with scenario practice.  Any materials/supplies used will be returned to tool kit or folder and room will be put back to rows at the end of each class.


    Expectation from students:

    • Students are to come prepared with materials and have reviewed materials from the prior class.
    • While using Quizlet students will stay on task with no navigation away from site. 
    • Phones will be hung in the phone holder at ALL other times. No phones allowed during class with the exception of Quizlet or scheduled breaks by the instructor
    • During lecture or video-based learning there will no talking and ALL attention will be on the instruction coming from video or teacher
    • LAB partners will be assigned and expected to be on task during each skill/practice session
    • Transitions between practice sessions will be quick with minimal talking and distraction

    You will be practicing skills that require working on your hands and knees, bending, standing and lifting.  If you have physical condition that might prevent you from participating in the course, please tell the instructor and they will work to accommodate your needs.

    • All work will be the students. Cheating is not permitted and will be dealt with according to the school discipline policy
