20-21 CJSA Health and Safety Plan

  • Goals:

    1. Protect the health and safety of students and staff - physical, emotional, and mental  
    2. Consistent with local health authorities’ recommendations
    3. Guaranteed and viable curriculum for all students and schools  
    4. Adaptability and flexibility with evolution of COVID 19  
    5. Emphasize a culture of personal accountability and high integrity
    6. Encourage predictable patterns of behavior
    7. Limit Interactions & Isolate groups as much as possible. The more proactive and self-contained plans are, the less impact a building will have when they have a positive case. When there is a positive case does the plan and effective implementation of the plan result in remote learning for an impacted classroom, grade, POD, school vs multiple schools and/or entire District.

Facility Strategies

  • Administrator and custodial walk-through:

    • At least weekly, principal and custodian complete bldg walk-through to identify and remedy safety issues.  

    Cleaning schedule and process:

    • Wall mount hand sanitizer stations installed in classroom without sinks/handwashing stations. 
    • Daily cleaning and disinfection by custodians of desks, tables, flat surfaces and other high-touch surfaces (door handles, light switches, hand railings) with Victory electrostatically charged sprayer and BruTab 6S (disinfectant tablet). 
    • Twice weekly deeper disinfection by custodians of desktops, tables, and other surface tops with SC Johnson TruShot Disinfectant. Student cubby areas disinfected with Victory Sprayer and BruTab 6S (disinfectant tablet).
    • All rooftop air filters changed at least 3/x yr; vents opened more widely to increase fresh air entering bldg.

    Classroom layout:

    • Classrooms arranged to maximize spacing btwn student desks.
    • Desks facing in same direction (not facing one another).
    • Seating at classroom tables, if applicable, provides at least 6-ft distance btwn students.
    • All nonessential items (those w/no instructional, learning, or job-related purpose) removed.
    • Teacher and student desks cleared for cleaning as needed.
    • Flexible seating (stools, floor tables, balls) allowed, with sanitation btwn each use. 

    Library use and cleaning:

    • Use of library by no more than one class at one time.
    • Students/staff use sanitizer when entering and exiting.
    • All physical distancing and cleaning guidelines in effect.
    • SORA (online book checkout) taught and utilized as part of regular library routine.
    • Access to library on limited basis; students may only go to library outside of designated time to return items.

    Computer Lab use and cleaning:

    • Students/staff use sanitizer when entering and exiting, and use sanitizing wipes on workstations as directed.
    • All physical distancing and cleaning guidelines in effect.    

    Safety signage:

    • Physical distancing signage on floor in main office lobby, Library desk, Health office, and offices of at-risk employees.
    • Plexiglass barriers in main office and on Library desk 

Student Strategies

  • Arrival/Dismissal:

    • Student arrival/dismissal follows schoolwide, district schedule. Students encouraged to arrive as close to start time as possible; those eating breakfast may arrive at 8:40.
    • Students expected to wear facemasks on playground and arrival/dismissal staging locations if physical distancing not possible.
    • Students keep belongings (backpacks, coats, lunchboxes) w/them or in distanced line by classrm exterior door while on playground and arrival/dismissal staging locations.
    • Students physically distance and abide by no-touch rules while in line.
    • Students enter and exit classrooms through exterior classroom doors.

    Office/Check In-Out Areas:

    • Tardy/late students enter through main office doors and check-in using typical process
    • Students must wash/sanitize hands prior to entering building.
    • Students will be prompted by staff to wear masks when entering building; masks will be supplies to those without.
    • Accompanying parents/guardians remain outdoors or in main office area, if physically distanced and space allows.

    Classrooms:

    • Students are expected to wear masks or other face coverings in the classroom; 'mask breaks' and fresh air opportunities will be given as needed. 
    • Students will use sanitizer as they enter the classroom and as per teacher instruction or personal preference.
    • Students will use their own personal supplies and will keep those separate from other student supplies.
    • Students will be assigned classroom supplies (manipulatives, scissors, etc.) and will keep those separate from other student supplies.
    • Students are expected to take home personal items daily (backpacks, coats, lunch boxes, etc) so that cubby area and shelves can be sanitized.

    Transitions/Hallways:

    • Students in hallways walk in single file and maintain 6-ft distance from students in other classes.
    • Students avoid congregating and/or stopping in hallways.
    • Students follow visual markers and signage that direct traffic flow in hallways.
    • Water fountains available only for filling of water bottles.

    Restrooms:

    • All students wash hands after restroom visits.
    • Restrooms limited to 4 students per restroom at one time.
    • Expectations and universal precaution signage posted in student restrooms.

    Cafeteria/Gym:

    • Universal precautions taught/reviewed prior to entering cafeteria.
    • Students wash/sanitize hands before entering cafeteria.
    • Cafeteria doors open to limit need to touch door handles.
    • Lunch boxes kept separate in classroom and transitioned to/from cafeteria only by those to whom they belong.
    • Students physically distance and abide by no-touch rules while in line.
    • Students sit at tables by grade level and/or classroom at lunchtime; seats not available marked with 'x' at breakfast and lunch.
    • Grade levels arrive/dismiss from cafeteria based on staggered schedule.
    • Students practice safe, respectful, and polite eating habits.
    • Students needing to use restroom ask a cafeteria supervisor; three students per restroom excused at one time.
    • Students do not share food.
    • Students exit the cafeteria after being excused by cafeteria duty.
    • Students needing more time to eat may move to designated table and sit 6 ft apart from others.
    • Cafeteria tables cleaned/sanitized between student groups.
    • Lunch may be served in classrooms if inadequate space for distancing in cafeteria.
    • Students follow indoor recess schedule if unable to go outdoors for lunch recess.

    Playground:

    • Students wash/sanitize hands prior to entering classroom from playground.
    • Students play in assigned areas, using safe distancing practices.

    Specials (PE/Health/Music/Library/Computer Lab/Art):

    • Students participate in specials in specials classrooms (Stage, Gym, Library, Art Rm, Comp Lab) if health and district guidelines allow; if not, specialists teach in grade level classrooms.
    • Staff must transition students both to and from specials.
    • Universal precautions taught/reviewed prior to entering specials classroom.
    • Students wash/sanitize hands prior to entering specials classroom.
    • Students needing to use restroom ask specials teacher; one student per restroom excused at one time.  

Parent Strategies

  • Arrival and Dismissal:

    • Parents, guardians, volunteers and visitors may enter main office/Conf Rm if wearing mask, physically distanced and space permits, but may not enter other indoor areas of bldg until health and district guidelines allow.
    • Parents and guardians waiting with or for their children at arrival/dismissal may be outdoors on schoolgrounds if physically distanced from other parents and children; if not physically distanced by at least 10 ft, parents and guardians must wear facemasks or shields.

    Office/Check-In-Out Areas:

    • Parents, guardians, volunteers and visitors may enter main office/Conf Rm if wearing mask, physically distanced and space permits, but may not enter other indoor areas of bldg until health and district guidelines allow. 

    Cafeteria:

    • Parents, guardians, volunteers and visitors may not be in the cafeteria/Gym until health and district guidelines allow.   

    Playground:

    • Parents, guardians, volunteers and visitors may not be on playground during recess times.

Staff Strategies

  • Arrival/Dismissal:

    • Staff wear masks or other face coverings throughout school day.
    • Staff assist in the supervision of students during arrival/dismissal.
    • Staff teach and review expectations and universal precautions for safe arrival/dismissal.

    Office/Check In-Out Areas:

    • Staff utilize signage, physical distancing, and mobile plexiglass barriers.
    • Staff teach and review expectations and universal precautions for safe student check-in process.
    • Staff prompt students to wear masks when entering schoolgrounds.

    Transitions/Hallways:

    • Staff follow visual markers and signage that direct traffic flow in hallways.
    • Staff avoid congregating and/or stopping in hallways.

    Restrooms:

    • Staff wash hands after restroom visits.
    • Expectations and universal precaution signage posted in staff restrooms.

    Cafeteria:

    • Staff wash/sanitize hands before entering cafeteria and before re-entering classroom.
    • Staff eat lunch in designated areas and physically distance if eating in common space.
    • Staff consume only food provided for themselves.
    • Staff separate their food from others' by using clearly marked bags/containers.

    Playground:

    • Staff remind students to wash/sanitize hands before entering classroom from playground.

    Specials (PE/Health/Music/Library/Computer Lab/Art):

    • Staff remind students to wash/sanitize hands before entering classroom.
    • Specialist classrooms utilize nonporous, nonfabric based materials and equipment.

Other Consideration Strategies

  • Meetings and Gatherings:

    • All meetings/gatherings/professional development follow physical distancing and universal precaution guidelines
    • No food will be shared during staff or parent meetings/gatherings/professional development
    • Online mtgs (for MDT, 504, RTI, Staff, PD purposes) will be utilized as often as possible.

    COVID Suspected Cases and Reporting:

    • Knowledge of positive COVID cases, knowledge of individuals who have received COVID test and are awaiting results, or knowledge of COVID exposure, will be reported to the Health Services Department while maintaining confidentiality acc to ADA and HIPPA.
    • In case of confirmed or suspected COVID, staff member contacts school nurse. School nurse follows Health Services process for handling of communicable diseases.

    Tech Device Management:
