Mr. Ivan L. Peterson.
Just a few things about me.
I started out as a classic Idaho farm boy growing up on a mink ranch in Star and graduating from Meridian High School in 1983. In order to escape the monotony of shoveling manure all day I escaped to college first studying Chemistry at Boise State University before transferring to the University of Idaho where I fell in love with the Social Sciences and Humanities. I received undergraduate degrees in History, Philosophy and Classical Languages while attending the University of Idaho and ended with Master of Arts in History. My masters work was primarily in Medieval and Early Mondern Forest Law and the Industrial Economy of Southern England. Ask me about it, and be prepared to listen to me natter on for 30 min or so.
I am very happy to be here with the Virtual School House and Westada School district. My general approach to social studies is to think of it as a discipline that is a type of ethical discourse. We look at the problems of the past, and examine how people responded. We look at the various consequences of those actions, and ask was that a good choice? Why or why not? And then we ask ourselves, are simmilar things going on in the world around us? How are people today responding to these simmilar problems? Do we thing the consequences will be any different? why or why not.
So, while each day we might be reading and talking about events from 150 years ago, we are always reflecting and thinking about our own world and our own lives.
I look forward to meeting and getting to know all of you. I hope that you will enjoy the intellectual journey that we will be taking together this term.
