Kindergarten Readiness

Students are eligible for kindergarten for the 2014-2015 school year if they are 5 years old by September 1, 2014.  In order to register, families must show proof of:

  • Original/official birth certificate (Student must be 5 years old by September 1, 2014.)
  • Immunization record with proof of required immunizations:  5 DTaP, 4 Polio, 2 MMR, 3 Hepatitis B, 2 Hepatitis A, 2 Varicella.
  • Proof of address (such as a power bill)

◦ Speak in complete sentences
◦ Show an interest in books and reading
◦ Retell stories
◦ Play with words and sounds (rhymes, syllables, beginning sounds)
◦ Recognize letters
◦ Use new vocabulary 

Early Numeracy Skills: 

◦ Count
◦ Identify numbers
◦ Write numbers with a model
◦ Sort and group

Fine & Gross Motor Skills: 

◦ Button/unbutton
◦ Zip
◦ Tie shoelaces
◦ Begin to hold writing tools with fingers
◦ Use scissors correctly
◦ Balance while standing, moving, and changing position
◦ Jump, hop, skip
◦ Throw and catch
◦ Bounce a ball
◦ Kick a ball
◦ Use a computer mouse

Parents help prepare their student(s) for coming to school by:  
Establishing morning and evening routines
Showing your child the walking/bus route
Talking about stranger safety and safe street crossing
Talking to your child/Reading with your child
