        Grammar: commas in a series, statements
    Writing:  thank you letters
    Math:  horizontal math drawings, add and subtract in math stories
    Science:   No science this week.

    THIS WEEK'S INSTRUCTIONAL FOCUS:
    Spelling: words with r-blends and short vowels (ex. grab, trip, crop)
    Reading:  How do animals communicate?
        Skill: Informational text - main idea and supporting details
        Words to Know: animal, how, make, of, some, why
        Grammar: commas in a series
    Writing:  handwriting, adding details to sentences, planning and writing a paragraph
    Math:  mid-module assessment, adding with result unknown, introduce the number track to solve problems.
    Science:   observe that young plants and animals are like, but not exactly like, their parents

    THIS WEEK'S INSTRUCTIONAL FOCUS:
    Spelling: ug, ut, un words (bug, hut, fun)
    Reading:  What can you do on a train?
        Skill: story structure (character, setting, plot)
    Grammar: adjectives
    Writing:  Complete sentences, spacing between letters and words, and capitalization
    Math:  counting on strategy to add, solve for missing addends
    Science:   Explain how animals use specific body parts to help them survive.

    Collaboration Update - 
     
    We have started leveled reading groups.  Each child attends a reading group specific to their reading levels and needs.   In collaboration, we discussed students who qualify for additional intervention time in reading.  We will be keeping additional data on those students.

    THIS WEEK'S INSTRUCTIONAL FOCUS:

    Reading:  Who can you meet in a neighborhood?
        Skill: text and graphic features
                 reading stamina
    Grammar: adjectives
    Writing:  Complete sentences, spacing between letters and words, and capitalization
    Math:  Understanding the equal sign, using doubles and doubles plus one as problem solving strategies, counting on
    Social Studies:   Understanding why rules are important?  What makes a good citizen at school and in community?

    • Reminder!!!  Our field trip is Wed. 9/25. Please remind your child to wear good walking shoes.

    Collaboration Update - 
    Mrs. Wilmore, our sixth certified teacher in first grade, does not have her own class.  She is here to support the 5 overcrowded classrooms.  Having a certfied teacher will allow us to create groups and provide meaningful individualized instruction to our students.  Next week she will begin teaching all our first graders the new science curriculum!

    Reading:  Why is going to school important?
        Skill: sequence of events
                 reading stamina
    Grammar: action verbs
    Writing:  Complete sentences, spacing between letters and words, and capitalization
    Math:  Decomposing and composing within 10.  Use bar models, pictures, and number sentences to show thinking.  Solve problems with change unknown in context.
    Social Studies:   Civics and Government - why rules are important.  Characteristics of a good citizen.

    • The team created leveled reading groups.  We also discussed who would teach which groups as well as what materials would be used for instruction.  Students will attend these groups for 30 minutes a day.  In addition, all students will still be receiving instruction in the core reading curriculum/standards in their regular classrooms.

    • We reviewed grade level reading assessment data and identified students for our reading interventions.  Students will be placed into groups based on reading needs.  We are also working to best utilize Mrs. Wilmore, our sixth first grade teacher.

    Spelling: _at and _an  words (ex. cat and can).  There is no set list.  We will be focusing on this spelling pattern and students will be asked to apply pattern to words in test rather than memorizing a set of specific words.
    Reading:  What is a Pal?
        Skill:  main idea and supporting details
        sight words: and, be, help, you, play, with
    Writing:  Complete sentences and spacing between letters and words, handwriting
    Math:  Understanding and working with numbers to 10
    Social Studies:   Civics - rules at home and school
