    Happy Friday!

Next week is our last full week of school for this year.  We will be wrapping up our economics, opinion writing, and math units.  We will not be sending home homework for next week, but we always encourage reading and math fact practice at home.

Students are finishing up their plant experiment.  Some plants will be coming home today and others on Monday. We have had a fun time seeing which plants have grown while others have not along with talking about why this might happen.

    Have a great weekend!

    Happy Friday!

Thank you for the donations for our school basket!  I have not seen the final product, but am excited to see it tonight at the Carnival.  Speaking of carnival…I hope to see many of you here tonight!  I will be working the prepaid table and Ms. Newman will be working the twister booth.

This was the last week of reading groups; however, PON groups will continue through Friday, May 25th.  We will be working on our last writing piece, geometry, time, and economics for the next two weeks.

    Have a great weekend!

    Happy Friday!

Our school carnival is fast approaching.  Last week prepaid forms were sent home in Friday folders.  Our class carnival basket is ice cream sundae.  If you are able to donate, please send in all items by next Friday, May 4th.  The PTO will be collecting the items and making baskets out of them.

Next week is a crazy, busy week in 2nd grade.  We have our IRI test on Monday, the music program on Wednesday, and the Boise Fire Department visiting with their safe house on Thursday.  Due to this, we are not working through a reading story next week, but will be still having point of need groups.

    Have a great weekend!

    Happy Friday!

Students worked on a fun weaving activity during art yesterday.  It was a bit tricky for some students, and I really loved seeing how students were helping each other out.  Many students are still completing their project, hopefully I can send more home today!

The graphs I mentioned last week will be coming home in Friday folders today.  These graphs show how the probes we use are nationally normed and each graph has a benchmark line that shows where a typical 2nd grader should be throughout the year.  The oral reading fluency graph shows how many words your child is reading correctly in a minute.  This probe provides information on how fluently a child can read in relation to other students.  The passages fluctuate in reading difficulty throughout the school year which can be one reason you might see small ups and downs.  The spring goal for all 2nd graders is 92 words read correctly in a minute.  The place value graph shows how your child is doing in regards to place value concepts in math.  These concepts include which number is greater or lesser, the value of the digit, sequencing of numbers, and determining a number when hundreds, tens, and ones are given.  This graph has a fixed benchmark line because student mastery is considered to be 80% at all times.  If students are not meeting the 80%, it is typically because they are struggling or inconsistent with determining a number given hundreds, tens, and ones.  The last graph is for math computation.  This graph shows how students are doing on addition and subtraction concepts.  I do want to note that the addition and subtraction problems are 2-digit or less.  In our 2nd grade curriculum, we are expected to spend a significant amount of time in 3-digit computation.  By the end of the school year, students should be able to add and subtract within 1000.  While this probe does not go that high, it is a good indicator of how well students are being able to fluently add and subtract with smaller numbers.  If you have any questions, please let me know.

Our school carnival is fast approaching.  Please see the newsletter for information on our class basket.  Friday folders also include a pre-purchase form for the carnival.  If you plan on attending the carnival, I would suggest preordering your tickets.  I have worked the ticket line every year and it is typically very long!

    Have a great weekend!

    Happy Friday!

Last week, dental sealant information from Central District Health was sent home.  If you would like your child to participate in this program, forms need to be returned by Wednesday, April 18th.

Our Student Display Board is in desperate need of new student artifacts.  Please take a moment to go through your child’s work and have your child pick a new piece to display.

This was a probe week in 2nd grade.  We see how students compare to national norms in oral reading fluency, math computation, and place value.  I have graphs for each individual student for each probe.  I have told students I would be sharing these graphs with them individually next week.  After I have shown students their graphs, I will send the copies home in Friday folders for you to review.  Each graph shows how your child is doing against a trend line.

    Have a great weekend!

    Happy Friday!

I loved seeing many of you last night at our Family Literacy Night.  I heard we had a great turnout out with many of our students participating in the different activities throughout the school.  The 2nd grade activities seemed to be a hit and fun to make with students.

Friday folders are full of student artifacts and school papers.  Before spring break, students completed their narrative stories and these are assessed and in folders for you to see.  There are also a few math quizzes because our math array unit was completed right before spring break also.  Our 2nd grade team has added a new parent math letter and game for the new unit.  Mr. Lowman has added a Fun Run form if you and your child would like to participate in the district run.  There is a flyer from the Discovery Stem Bus that students participated in this weekend.  I have added two of the paper games from last night’s Family Literacy Night.  Last but not least…there is a flyer and form to have dental sealants done through the Central District Heath Department.  This is a no cost to you service.  Please look through the form and return if you would like to have dental sealants done for your child.

Please see the attached newsletter.  Also, as a reminder, my website is updated weekly with a blog announcement and weekly newsletter.

    Have a great weekend!

    Happy Friday!

We have our March Stallion Pride Assembly today.  Our character trait this month is loyalty.  Students voted on their choice of who they felt displayed loyalty in the classroom and to others.  If your child was the student chosen, I contacted you via email on Wednesday inviting you to join us today.

Since next week is a four day school week, we will not complete a new reading story or word sorts.  Instead we will spend more time completing our weather unit in science and arrays in math.  After Spring Break, we will start our geography unit and move back to addition and subtraction computation up to 1,000.

Our book fair will be the week of April 2 – 6th (week right after Spring Break).  Please see the flyer in today’s Friday Folders.  Ms. Lundgren is in need of volunteers if you are able to volunteer.  Thursday, April 5th will be our Family Read Night.  The book fair will be open that night and grade-levels will be having reading activities in classrooms along with a guest reader.

    Have a great weekend!

    Happy Friday!

It was great to visit with parents and dance with students at the Silver Sage Dance Party last Friday.  I love working one of the ticket tables so I can see everyone when they come in.  The dance is always a highlight during the school year.

Today students finished up Module 4 in our math curriculum.  We will be skipping Module 5 for a few weeks and working on arrays in Module 6.  We will come back to Module 5 right after spring break.

Next week, is our Stallion Pride meeting on Friday, March 16th.  Our character trait for the month of March is loyalty.  Students will be helping to determine who should be our monthly Stallion based of this character trait.  While I do have students vote on their choice, and vote again if a tie-breaker, I do not announce our student until the assembly.  I do let parents know in advance so they can join us if possible for the assembly.

    Have a great weekend!

    Happy Friday!

Tonight is our school dance and the theme is the 80s.  I hope to see many of you there!  I went back to my 80s roots of big hair, large earrings, and pegged jeans for today.  I’ll be adding a couple quick pics on Seesaw for a sneak peek of what you could see at the dance tonight!  If you don’t have access to your child’s Seesaw account, please send me an email and I’ll send you the link.

We have finished up our weighing and balancing unit and started weather this week.  We will also be finishing the first unit on addition and subtraction next week.  We’ll return to computation after spring break.  We are going to break it up with a short unit on arrays.

I hope everyone enjoyed the field trip video on Seesaw.  I unfortunately forgot to show the students last week and will make sure they see it today.

    Have a great weekend!

While it has been a short week at school, it has been jam packed.  We had our 2nd grade field trip to the Boise Watershed on Tuesday.  With no school on Monday, and early release on Thursday, 2nd grade focused a significant chunk of our remaining days on math and science.  Today we will be wrapping up our weighing and balancing unit and watching the Idaho Theatre for Youth performance this afternoon.

Our field trip was amazing and students loved it.  I have made a photo slideshow to music that features all three 2nd grade classes on the field trip.  I have uploaded the video to Seesaw for you to see.  If you are not connected to your child’s account, you can request access by emailing me.

We are back to our normal school schedule next week with our weekly story, intervention groups, math, and we will be starting our new weather unit in science.

    Have a great weekend!
