    Happy Friday!

Tonight is our school dance from 6 to 8.  All students need to be accompanied by a parent or guardian.  I will be at the dance for the first part of the evening, I hope to see you there!

Today students completed their first science experiment in the world of water and erosion.  Students made “mountains” and then determined how rivers flow out to oceans.  Please be looking for pictures of your child’s experiment on Seesaw.  I will be posting the pictures today.

As a reminder, homework will consist of reading only for next week.  We will also not have reading workshops in 2nd grade with the four day week.

Next week we will be working on…

               Math – Module 5 Addition & Subtraction

                Science – Work of Water

                Writing – Narrative Writing

    Have a great weekend!

    Happy Friday!

Our class Valentine list of names is coming home today in Friday folders.  Exchanging Valentine’s in the classroom is voluntary.  I do ask that if students choose to participate, they have a Valentine for every student in the classroom.  We will be decorating Valentine bags in the classroom for students to use next Friday, February 14th.  Please do not send in a Valentine box.  Our class party will be from 2:45 to 3:45.

Our Stallion Pride Assembly is early this month due to a performance by the Idaho Theater for Youth and a collaboration day that occurs on the last two Fridays of February.  We will be celebrating our monthly stallions at an early assembly on Friday, February 14th.  This assembly will be from 2:00 to 2:30 before last recess and classroom Valentine parties.  Our character trait this month is generosity.  Students voted today on their choice of our classroom representative.  I have emailed the parents of the student chosen to represent our classroom for generosity.

Next week is also our last week in Module 4 Addition and Subtraction.  This module focused on adding and subtracting within 200.  Our next module will continue to focus on addition and subtraction; however, students will be working with 3-digit numbers up to 1000.

Please see our February newsletter for important dates and other information.

Next week we will be working on…

Reading – My Name is Gabriela

                Math – Module 4 Addition & Subtraction

    Happy Friday!

We finished our plants unit in science today.  All students will be bringing home his or her “Grass Head” that we have been growing for the last three weeks.  As with all experiments, there were different results for each child.  A good question to ask tonight could be…what did your child find surprising about the Grass Head experiment.

Valentine’s Day is fast approaching!  I will send home a list of student names and a link to our party signup next Friday, February 7th.

Next week we will be working on…

Reading – Officer Buckle & Gloria

               Math – Module 4 Subtraction

               Social Studies – Global Perspectives

               Writing – Opinion Writing

    Happy Friday!

My final semester 1 grades are updated and complete in PowerSchool.  There will not be any report cards going home until the end of the year.  If you have any questions on how to log into your child’s PowerSchool account, please contact Daneva in the office.

Your child’s Friday folder has a new math game to play at home that supports our current math lessons.  Also, the PTO has added a flyer for their Silver Sage Math Night next Thursday, January 23rd

Our 2nd grade January newsletter listed our next Stallion Pride assembly as being on Friday, January 31st.  The assembly was changed yesterday to next Friday, January 24th.  Students will be voting on Monday for the student who exemplified honesty throughout the month of January.  I will then contact that child’s parents on Monday to invite them to join us at the assembly.

Our nurse has asked us to include the following information in our parent communication.

    Illness or Minor Injury:

If your child is ill, please do not send them to school. We ask that you notify the school if your child has been diagnosed with a contagious illness. Children should be fever free (without a fever reducing medication) and not vomiting within 24 hours before returning to school. If a student becomes ill or injured at school, they should go to the nurse’s office. A pass from the teacher is required, except in an emergency. If your child becomes ill enough to go home during the school day, you will be notified. Children are not allowed to leave the school grounds without permission and will not be sent home unless the parent/guardian is notified and arranges for the child’s transportation home. If your child has a minor injury, the school nurse or designee will administer basic first aid. If the injury is serious, every effort will be made to notify the parent/guardian immediately. Parents/guardians are requested to keep current daytime phone and emergency contact information with the school office. Children will not be kept in from recess for minor illnesses. If it is necessary for your child for medical reasons to remain indoors while at school, please contact the school nurse.

Next week we will be working on…

Reading – Schools Around the World

Math – Module 4 Addition and Subtraction

               Science – Plants

               Writing – Opinion Writing

    Have a great weekend!

    Happy Friday!

It has been a great first week back from Christmas Break.  Monday and Tuesday were a bit rough in terms of students and myself trying to get back into our schedule, there were many yawns and “brain breaks.”  We persevered through our tiredness and started some new projects in the classroom!

Has your child shared our root viewer experiment?  On Tuesday, students “planted” seeds in a damp towel lined CD case to see what would happen.  Each day students have been viewing their seeds and recording their results.  There have been some big changes!  Students are not recording results today; they will record their last results on Monday and bring home the project.  This is typically a four-day experiment, but I am not at Silver Sage today due to doctor appointments.  Students and I discussed that we wanted to see what would happen if we left the seeds moist and alone for a few days instead of recoding the final results with the substitute today.  The students and I will have a nice surprise on Monday when we return from the weekend!  Students also started a new experiment today with our substitute, stayed tuned for next week’s experiment information!

Next week is the last week of the semester and there are many different assessments that students need to finish up on.  With this in mind, the 2nd grade team decided to forgo our reading story and work on some different activities next week.  Grades will be finalized by the end of Friday, January 17th in PowerSchool.  There will not be any report cards coming home at this time.

I have posted our January newsletter under newsletters.

Next week we will be working on…

Math – Module 4 Addition and Subtraction

               Science – Plants

               Writing – Opinion Writing

    Have a great weekend!

    Happy Friday!

It’s that time…Christmas break is here.  Students have worked hard the last few days to finish up activities before the break while they are also very ready to have their break!  I will be taking home the activities they completed this week along with their snowman writing to assess over the holidays.  Friday folders will be full of evidence pieces when we come back.

Today is our school sing-along and Christmas parties.  The class is very excited to build their snowmen based off their own how-to directions.  I will be taking pictures and adding them to Seesaw for you to see.  It might take me a few days to do this!

Students have a reading challenge in their Friday folders.  If students complete the reading challenge over the break and return it to me, I will write a Stallion Pride for the completed activity.  There is no homework coming home over the break, instead we will be sending it home the Monday we return.

When we come back, we will be working on…

               Reading – Ah, Music!

Math – Module 4 Addition and Subtraction

               Science – Plants

               Writing – Opinion Writing

    Have a merry Christmas break!

    Happy Friday!

Have you heard about our Snowman writing?  Students have completed an informational writing on the steps to build a snowman out of food.  This has been a two-week process with brainstorming, drafting, revising, editing, and completing a final draft.  My gift to students on completion of this activity and for Christmas is the materials to build the snowman.  Students will be able to build their snowman (and eat if they choose!) using their directions at our Christmas party next Friday, December 20th.

Friday folders are filled with different SSE forms and information this week.  There is a new math game for students to play at home.  Ms. Lundgren has added a Roaring Readers form to keep track of minutes read at home.  If your child participates and reads the amount required, your child will receive a free pass to Roaring Springs.  There is a certificate for each child to receive a free kid’s meal at Panera.  The expiration date is 12/31/19 so it does need to be used soon if you choose to use it.  Last, I am sending home new login sheets for students.  Students no longer have access to Moby Max as Silver Sage decided to not renew our license.

Next week is our Christmas Sing-along and parties on Friday, December 20th.  The sing-along starts at 1:30 and will be go to recess at 2:30.  After recess, our class party will start.  Students will be able to make their snowman, have another craft opportunity, and watch a Christmas movie.

Next week we will be working on…

Reading – Click, Clack, Moo: Cows That Type

Math – Module 4 Addition and Subtraction

               Science - Plants

    Have a great weekend!

    Happy Saturday!

Sorry, I'm running a little late with this week's post.  Yesterday was a very productive collaboration day at SSE, and I ran out of time to add it.

2nd grade had our parent math night on Tuesday.  Thank you to the parents who came and spent some time with us working through math.  We have turned our PowerPoint into a PDF and also videotaped the presentation.  I will be adding these both to my website, but I am having some technical difficulties uploading them at my house.  I will send an email at the beginning of the week when they are available.

I have uploaded our December newsletter.  It is hard to believe that we only have two more weeks until Christmas break!  Remember the canned food drive is happening at SSE until December 17th.  The class to bring in the most cans will receive an extra recess.  If you are able, please consider donating to the food drive.

Next week we will be working on...
Reading - Jellies, a story about jellyfish
Math - Addition and subtraction to 100
Writing - Final draft for informational writing
              Science - Plants

    Happy Friday!

It is hard to believe that Thanksgiving Break is already here.  Before you know it, it will be Christmas Break!  Students worked hard this week to complete a few different assessments before break.  We finished up our Module 3 place value unit in math and will start addition and subtraction when we return.  Students who do not consistently show they can manipulate and represent numbers in multiple ways will continue to receive place value instruction during their intervention time.

Homework will not be coming home today.  2nd grade will be sending it home on Monday, December 2nd and ask it to be returned on Thursday, December 5th.  There is no school on Friday, December 6th for collaboration.  Since it is a short week, there will not be a stand along reading story for the week.  Instead, we will focus more on math and writing.

Our 2nd Grade Parent Math Night is fast approaching.  This will be on Tuesday, December 3rd in the Silver Sage library.  We will go through the different models and strategies that we will be working with in addition and subtraction.  We will also briefly discuss the place value unit that we just completed and how it works with addition and subtraction.

Next week we will be working on…

Writing – How to Make a Snowman writing

Math – Module 4 Addition and Subtraction

Social Studies – Groups change over time

    Have a great Thanksgiving Break!
