THE MVHS CHOIRS

About the director, Andrew Percifield:  I joined the West Ada School District's Mountain View High School as Director of Choirs in 2014.  MVHS is a school that leans into the future and I am proud to be a part of this Maverick community!  I am inspired and energized by my classes every day--something I first experienced as a new teacher in the Minidoka County School District years ago.  After 24 years teaching at the junior high, high school, and university levels, I have been witness to countless genuinely magical experiences with students and singers in my choirs over the years.  I look forward to teaching and creating great music and memories with all my future choirs at MVHS.  I am a graduate of the College of Idaho, received my master's degree in Conducting and Pedagogy from the University of Iowa, and completed my doctoral coursework and recitals in Conducting at the University of Missouri-Kansas City Conservatory

  • CANTARE  (Concert Choir)  is a non-auditioned junior varsity choir for female singers.  All ninth grade females are placed in Cantare to prepare for advancement in the program, but 10-12 grade students are also in the class.  Music of all historical eras will be examined through listening and singing.  An emphasis on introducing applicable vocal technique and musicianship skills, establishing high school rehearsal discipline, developing small group performance confidence, and learning to work closely with others are the primary objectives of the course.  Students are strongly encouraged to register for the Extracurricular Performance Experience in order to participate in any performances/choir activities occurring outside of school hours.

MEN’S CHOIR  (Men’s Concert Choir) is a non-auditioned junior varsity choir for the male singer.  All ninth grade males are placed in Men’s Choir to prepare for advancement in the program, but 10-12 grade students are also in the class.  Music written especially for men’s voices from all historical eras and genres will be examined through listening and singing.

BELLE VOCE  (Treble Choir)  is a varsity level, auditioned choir for women’s voices. Music of all historical eras will be examined and/or performed.  Emphasis is on developing advanced musicianship and vocal ability, rehearsal discipline, and exploring the beauty in music composed specifically for women’s voices.  Independent practice/study outside of rehearsal is required.  Students are strongly encouraged to register for the Extracurricular Performance Experience in order to participate in any performances/choir activities occurring outside of school hours.

A CAPPELLA is a varsity level, auditioned mixed choir for advanced voices.  Music of all historical eras will be examined and/or performed.  Emphasis is on developing advanced musicianship and vocal ability, advanced rehearsal discipline, and exploring the beauty in music composed for advanced mixed-voice choirs.  Independent practice/study outside of rehearsal is required.  Students are strongly encouraged to register for the Extracurricular Performance Experience in order to participate in any performances/choir activities occurring outside of school hours.

PREMIER JAZZ  is a small mixed-voice jazz choir that is auditioned from the most experienced members of the MVHS choral program.  Emphasis is placed on study and performance of jazz music from several style periods.  The ensemble may feature an instrumental combo, which is also auditioned.  Independent practice/study outside of rehearsal is required to remain eligible for participation.  Singers will learn how to use and care for audio equipment and will be active in all efforts of set-up and strike for rehearsals.  Students are strongly encouraged to register for the Extracurricular Performance Experience in order to participate in any performances/choir activities occurring outside of school hours.

CHAMBER CHOIR  is a new auditioned varsity level mixed-voice choir for highly developed high school voices (mostly Senior students). Music of all genres and periods will be examined and/or performed.  Emphasis is on developing sophisticated musicianship and vocal ability, exceptional rehearsal discipline skills, and exploring the beauty in music composed for advanced small, mixed-voice choirs.  Independent practice/study outside of rehearsal is required, as is a willingness to work unceasingly to create music that is unmistakably beautiful.  Students are strongly encouraged to register for the Extracurricular Performance Experience in order to participate in any performances/choir activities occurring outside of school hours.
