Mrs. Melissa Bass

Welcome back students!  My name is Melissa Bass and I have been teaching at MVHS for 10 years.

What I love most about mathematics is the challenge!  I look at mathematics as puzzles to solve using new or old knowledge and sometimes help from friends (classmates).  You will not succeed unless you get involved.

My journey to Mathematics teacher began when I worked as a Pharmacy Technician at St. Luke's Inpatient Pharmacy.  I trained new technicians how to make IV's for patients in the hospital.  This job responsibility took basic algebra skills and I was shocked to see many adults struggle in this area.  Most new trainees would say "oh I was never good at math," "I hate math," or "Mr(s).  _________ ruined math for me I was so good until then."  I went to Boise State University to begin my Pre-Pharmacy requirements but it was in a math class that I changed my direction.  The professor had the class engaged and she made the material so easy and less intimidating.  I thought if only there was more teachers out there like her we wouldn't have the numerous adults who hate math.  My goal is to help students over come their anxiety and hatred towards math by exposing them to a less inimidating environment and the wonderful feeling of math success.

When I am not fighting crime as a teacher,  I enjoy being outdoors with my family fishing, camping, or biking.  Don't get me wrong, I can easily find myself on a weekend enjoying a Netflix marathon.

I look forward to working with you this year!  Go Mavs!
