Bridging the Gap - Helping Students and Families

  • Bridging the Gap Logo
The Education Foundation provides for unmet basic needs of students attending West Ada Schools.  We want to remove barriers so every child arrives at school every day happy, healthy, ready to learn.  We see our Bridging the Gap program helping make sure students are able to come to school healthy, happy and ready to learn, eye glasses, hearing aids, shoes, school supplies and clothing to name a few.  Many of our students just need lunch or breakfast to get through the day.
A story about our program- this happened in October of 2019 a reason to give to Bridging the Gap.
Recently, on a cold and rainy day, while a middle school students was picking up his little brother I noticed he was wearing flip flops with socks.  After talking with him about this choice I learned he has no shoes.  I had an interpreter call his mother and she validated his father wears a size ten and the father and son used to share shoes.  Now that this young man's feet have grown to a size 11 he no longer fits into Dad's shoes.  I used ordered him a pair of shoes.  He came and picked them up yesterday!  He was THRILLED! (and so was his mother).  I also gave him 8 pair of the X-large Bomba socks from the sock grant.  These stories happen every day in our schools.
    Bridging the Gap
This program can help students get everything from lunches, shoes, basic hygiene needs, hearing aids, glasses, bus passes, computers and more.
    Bus to Operation School Bell
Every year we need to pay for 30-50 students to go to Operation School Bell the busing alone costs us about $4000.  We would appreciate donations to help fund this worthwhile event.
We work with local non profits to find clothing for students in need.
    Pay to Play Fees
The Foundation understands after school activities are often the "anchors that keep students in school".  The cost of some after school programs are difficult for low income students to afford.  We have two special funds that help students pay these fees: Ben Ung Scholarship and the Eagle Kiwanis Scholarship.
The counselors, social workers and nurses in our district help us distribute these funds.
    Community Schools

We have three community schools.  Desert Sage, McMillan and Peregrine Elementary.  A community school provides:

    • Basic needs from our pantry: clothing, shoes, household items and hygiene products
    • Computer and internet access for parents
    • Building relationships with families to better serve our students
    • Helps families create solutions to problems involving their basic necessities including housing, employment, food, transportation, etc...
