Degrees and Certifications:

Mrs. Tonya Vennell

Hi!  I am Tonya Vennell. I decided to become a teacher when I was in sixth grade.  I had a student teacher that year who greatly influenced my career path, before that I was planning on becoming an archeologist!  I grew up in South Dakota and graduated from Black Hills State University with degrees in elementary education and special education.  I taught students in kindergarten through eigth grade in a resource room in Chicago for two years.  After that my husband, Tim and I moved to Elizabethton, Tennessee where I worked with children birth to six years old with disabilities.  I was the director of an early intervention program and taught preschool for 4 years.

Then I began a new kind of an adventure with my family.  We studied French for a year in Quebec, Canada before relocating to the Democratic Republic of Congo, Africa.  We spent 12 years living in 3 different countries (DRC, Lesotho, and Kenya) working with Mission Aviation Fellowship (which is based in Nampa).  I have 4 daughters and 1 son.  They range in age from 22 to 14.  We enjoy playing cards and other games, having friends over and watching movies together.

When I am not working, my favorite activities include reading and baking.  If it is a really great day I get to do both!  My favorite thing to say right now is, "Haba na haba, hujaza ke baba."  It is a Swahili phrase that means, "Little by little the pot gets full."  We don't always see great big changes but little by little we get there, one bit at a time.

This is my first year at Virtual School House.  I have worked as a resource room special education teacher for the West Ada School System for the past 6 years.  I am available Monday through Friday from 9-1.   Please do not hesitate to contact me at vennell.tonya@westada.org.

Thanks for sharing your children with me!
