     Welcome to 6th Grade English

Dear Parents and Students,

I am excited for the 2020/2021 school year! This is my 5th year at Heritage Middle School and I absolutely love it.  I started my career teaching elementary school in Arizona and when I came to Heritage Middle School, I found out how awesome it is to teach 6th graders. As you know, 6th graders are fun-loving students who enjoy laughing and the excitement of finally being in middle school.   I find it so rewarding to share my love of reading with my students and
to watch students learn and grow.  By the end of the school year, they have changed so much.

One of my favorite parts of teaching is to find ways to make learning fun.   My goal in reading is to help students find what genre of books are their favorites, so that by the time they leave my class they know what books interest them. In writing, students in my class start the year writing about things they know so that they never run out of writing topics.

Each summer, I choose my own topic to research so that I am constantly growing in my teaching strategies.  Over the years, I have delved into the books by Donalyn Miller, who shares her ideas and skills on helping students find the books they want to read.  I think I now own every one of Kelly Gallagher's books, who is an expert in teaching writing to middle and high schoolers.  His tools have taken my writing lessons to the next level and have given my students a new confidence and interest in writing.  My own daughter is in middle school and it's fun for me to find out what books she likes so that I can read them, too.  I read a stack of recently published middle school fiction books each summer so that I can make recommendations to my students.

This summer, I have spent hours taking classes on technology and incorporating it into my English class.  My goal is motivate students to be passionate about their own learning and to guide them along the way.  I've read books and taken classes about the best practices in Blended Learning and Distance Learning so I can be prepared to teach your students either in a brick-and-mortar school setting and/or in a virtual setting.

I look forward meeting your students and I can't wait for the school year to begin.  If you ever have any questions or concerns, you can email me at Donohue.Christine@westada.org.

Go Huskies!
