Mrs. Lori Wheat

Welcome to the West Ada Preschool Program at Discovery. I am very excited for the coming school year and having the opportunity to work with you to design the best possible educational experience possible for your child.

I would like to take this opportunity to tell you a little about myself. My name is Lori Wheat. I grew up in Pocatello and graduated from Idaho State University with a mixed degree in Special Education and Education of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing. My husband and I moved to Boise in 1992, shortly after graduation. Upon moving to Boise, I began working for the Idaho School for the Deaf and Blind as a regional teacher. There I worked with Infants and Toddlers ages birth to three and their parents. I also consulted with schools on methods of accommodations to help these students when they entered school until graduation.

I began working for the West Ada School District in 2004 and have been with the district for the last 12 years as either a Resource Room or Extended Resource Room Teacher. Last year, I was asked to move to the Deaf and Hard of Hearing Program at Ponderosa until a Teacher of the Deaf could be found. I am very excited to have a new experience teaching in the Preschool Program this year as this age group has always been my favorite. I have a lot to learn to begin with, but am confident that with the help of my fabulous assistant, Miss Benita, I will learn quickly.

On a personal note, I have been married to my wonderful husband for 30 years. We have two remarkable daughters. My youngest is 19 years old. She is a Sophomore at Boise State, studying Political Science and English. She currently lives at home while she is attending school and working. My oldest daughter is 22 years old. She graduated from Boise State this last May and promptly left for Zambia Africa to work in the Peace Corp for the next two years. So far, it has been very difficult for us to have her gone, but she is loving it!

As a family, we enjoy bike riding, camping, skiing, white water rafting, hiking, and swimming. My husband is active in mountain bike racing, so we spend a great deal of time going to races during the summer. This year, he raced in the High Cascades 100 in Bend, Oregon. He actually rode the entire 100 miles and is still alive to tell about it!

When I am not running from one place to another, I enjoy my quiet time reading and doing jigsaw puzzles. I also have an 11-year-old lab who is my constant companion. Because of her age, we spend a lot of time just quietly enjoying each other’s company.

As the school year progresses, I am sure that you will get to know me as I look forward to getting to know you. I encourage you to contact me with any concerns or suggestions. You may call me at the school at 855-4090 or through e-mail at wheat.lori@westada.org
