Degrees and Certifications:
Mrs. Madonna Smith
Over twenty years ago, I was fortunate to begin my teaching adventure. I have taught every grade level K-5, and this year I am doing something completely different...I'm implementing reading interventions. I originally graduated from San Diego State University with my degree in psychology. I didn’t quite know what I was going to do with that, but I knew I wanted to work with kids. Quite a few years later, after doing lots of volunteering in my own children’s classrooms, I decided to become a teacher. So back to school I went. I received my teaching credential at California State University San Marcos, and then later went back to school and received a Master’s Degree in curriculum and instruction at Northwest Nazarene University, as well as National Board Certification in Literacy.
I am one that loves to change, loves to learn, and I am really intrigued by how children learn to read so I am constantly researching and trying new strategies to help students be successful.
This year our District is piloting a program where one teacher at ten different schools is designated as a reading interventionist to provide support to our young readers that are building their foundational literacy skills. It's exciting to be part of this reading-centered pilot!
