Ms. Kristen Fields
I began my teaching career in 2009 with the Nampa School District. I taught at Columbia and Nampa High schools through the 2014-2015 school year; and decided to take a break to have my second child and pursue full-time professional photography work locally and regionally. I am absolutely thrilled to be back in teaching, and even more thrilled to be part of the Mavs family. Horns up!
My passion for photography began at the young age of five when my dad gave me my first camera for Christmas. I was immediately hooked, and constantly set up shoots on our back porch with dolls, stuffed animals, and occasionally my cat when he would cooperate. This was all with film, and after a bit, my parents had me save my allowance in order to fund the developing and printing costs, as they saw no end in sight to my photographing. In high school, my passion was fueled by the dark room and a dear teacher who encouraged me to go on to college for photography.
I enrolled in Northwest College's Photographic Communications program in 2001, after a miserable year at BSU not yet knowing what I wanted to do with my life. I loved my time at NWC, and still, keep in touch with my classmates and professors. After NWC, I came home for a year and worked in local portrait studios. In 2004, I left everything behind and enrolled in Brooks Institute of Photography to complete my BA and further my education in photography. Brooks was a place of wonder for me, not only because of the beauty of Santa Barbara but the possibilities and future I would be able to pursue through photography really came alive while I was there. I graduated from Brooks in 2006 with my BA in Professional Photography, with an emphasis in commercial advertising, and came back home to Boise to get my feet back under me and figure out where to go next.
I never thought I'd stay in Boise more than a year, and after 12 years, am still eating my words that "I'll never live in Boise again." In the year I was home, I met my husband Scott, and that was it. We now have two children, Lex who is wonderfully sweet and into all things technology at the tender age of five, and Ali who is my mini-me, fiercely independent and strong-willed, and ready to explore the world at a very precocious three.
I still work professionally in the photographic industry in the evenings and on weekends. I'm a photographer through and through, and rarely go very long without a camera in my hands. Photography has taken me to the ends of the earth and back again, literally - I've traveled to Papua New Guinea, Singapore, China, Spain, Mexico, Canada, and most of the U.S. I have fallen in love with sharing all the opportunities photography has to offer, big and small, with my students.
