Welcome to the 2018/2019 School Year!
Welcome to Eighth Grade English and Six through Eighth Grade Literacy Lab! I am thrilled to be here at Lowell Scott Middle again this year, and am looking forward to getting to know and working with each and every one of my students.
I recently moved to the Treasure Valley area. However, I grew up in the area and attended Meridian High School. I have been out of Idaho for two decades now, and am excited to be back. During my time away, I lived and taught in Washington state, and recently returned from living and teaching abroad in The Land of Smiles, Thailand! After years away, it sure is good to be home in the great state of Idaho! My travel and teaching experience have instilled in me a passion for life and learning, and I look at each new experience as an adventure affording new lessons to be learned.
I hold a Bachelor of English and a Masters in Teaching from Washington State University. Go Cougs! I am currently in my ninth year of teaching. I began my teaching career in Washington state and continued in Thailand. I have taught a range of grade levels from upper elementary to high school. My experience teaching in international schools in Thailand has provided unique opportunities to build my dynamic teaching practice. I have taught in schools with varied curricula and with colleagues from many different countries. I also have taught students from all over the world and from diverse backgrounds, and have made lifelong connections with students both in the U.S. and abroad. Although, one thing remains the same, in each of my classrooms, my students are my kids. I uniquely care for each one.
This year I will be teaching:
*Literacy Lab (Grades 6-8)
I am thankful to have a thriving family. I have been married to my amazing husband (Yasha) for 17 years and counting. We have two busy, beautiful children: Raffi (10) and Myla (12). Like their mom and dad, they are adventurous and full of life. We are loving it here in the Treasure Valley, and enjoy spending our evenings and weekends outdoors soaking in all the area has to offer.
English 8 integrates the skills identified for 8th grade by district and state standards. Based on priority standards, there will be four major units: narrative, informative, argument, and speaking/listening. Additionally, four bridge units are included in order to reteach or pre-teach the standards and to formatively assess student learning. See the West Ada School District website for detailed descriptions. Instruction focuses on reading strategies, comprehension skills, the writing process, modes of writing, writing traits, and language usage. Students will read from various genres.
Literacy Lab focuses primarily on strategies to improve reading comprehension. Regular progress monitoring will ensure students' instructional needs are met. Literacy Lab will also include additional scaffolded instruction, exploration and application in the core literacy domains of language, reading, writing, and listening/speaking. Literacy Lab is not intended to duplicate the regular English curriculum, but support students in their literacy needs across the middle school curricula. Homework support, when needed, will also be provided.
I welcome parent communication. I am looking forward to partnering with parents in order to support all students. Feel free to email me with any concerns you may have. Together we can support students to be the best they can be.
