Welcome to the 2020-2021 School Year!
Welcome to Eighth Grade English and Six through Eighth Grade Literacy Lab! It's my fourth year at LSMS and I am so happy to be here. I am looking forward to getting to know each and every one of my students.
I grew up in the area and attended Meridian High School. Although Idaho is definitely in my blood, I have spent several years in Washington state and abroad. During my time away, I lived and taught in Washington state, and returned in 2017 from living and teaching abroad for five years in the land of smiles, Thailand! After years away, it sure is good to be home in the great state of Idaho! As Kate Douglas Wiggin once said, "There is a kind of magicness about going far away and coming back all changed". My travel and teaching experience have instilled in me a passion for life and learning, and I look at each new experience as an adventure affording new lessons to be learned. While I am content to be rooted in Idaho soil, wanderlust is always with me.
I hold a Bachelor of English and a Master's in Teaching from Washington State University. Go Cougs! I am currently in my 11th year of teaching. I have taught a range of grade levels from upper elementary to high school. My experience teaching in international schools in Thailand has provided unique opportunities to build my dynamic teaching practice. I have taught in schools with varied curricula and with colleagues from many different countries. I also have taught students from all over the world and from diverse backgrounds and have made lifelong connections with students both in the U.S. and abroad. Although, one thing remains the same, in each of my classrooms, my students are my kids. I uniquely care for each one.
This year I will be teaching:
*Literacy Lab (Grades 6-8)
I am thankful to have a thriving family. I have been married to my amazing husband (Yasha) for 20 years and counting. We have two busy, beautiful children: Raffi (12) and Myla (14). Like their mom and dad, they are adventurous and full of life. We are loving it here in the Treasure Valley and enjoy spending our evenings and weekends outdoors soaking in all the area has to offer. These days, many of our weekends are spent in the surrounding wilderness and in our backyard playing with our 175 pound English Mastiff, enjoying a game of cornhole or badmiton, or gardening.
English 8 integrates the skills identified for 8th grade by district and state standards. Based on priority standards, there will be four major units: The Impact of Information (informative), Learning from the Past (research), Taking a Stand (argument), and The Power of Perspective (narrative). See the West Ada School District website for detailed descriptions. Instruction focuses on reading strategies, comprehension skills, the writing process, modes of writing, writing traits, and language usage. Students will read from various genres.
Literacy Lab focuses primarily on strategies to improve reading comprehension. Regular progress monitoring will ensure students' instructional needs are met. Literacy Lab will also include additional scaffolded instruction, exploration and application in the core literacy domains of language, reading, writing, and listening/speaking. Literacy Lab is not intended to duplicate the regular English curriculum, but support students in their literacy needs across the middle school curricula.
I welcome parent communication. I am looking forward to partnering with parents in order to support all students. Feel free to email me with any concerns you may have. Together we can support students to be the best they can be.
