Welcome to the 2017/2018 School Year!
Welcome to Eighth Grade English and Eighth Grade Health! I am thrilled to be joining the Lowell Scott Middle School team this year, and am looking forward to getting to know and working with each and every one of my students.
I recently moved to the Treasure Valley area. However, I grew up in the area and attended Meridian High School. I have been out of the state for two decades now, and am excited to be back in the amazing state of Idaho. During my time away, I lived and taught in Washington state, and recently returned from living and teaching abroad in The Land of Smiles, Thailand! After years away, it sure is good to be home in the great state of Idaho! My travel and teaching experience have instilled in me a passion for life and learning, and I look at each new experience as an adventure affording new lessons to be learned.
I hold a Bachelor of English and a Masters in Teaching from Washington State University. Go Cougs! I am currently in my eighth year of teaching. I began my teaching career in Washington state and continued in Thailand. I have taught a range of grade levels from upper elementary to high school. My international experience teaching in international schools in Thailand has provided unique opportunities to build my dynamic teaching practice. I have taught in schools with varied curricula and with colleagues from many different countries. I also have taught students from all over the world and from diverse backgrounds, and have made lifelong connections with students both in the U.S. and abroad. Although, one thing remains the same, in each of my classrooms, my students are my kids. I uniquely care for each one.
This year I will be teaching:
I am thankful to have a thriving family. I have been married to my amazing husband (Yasha) for 17 years and counting. We have two busy, beautiful children: Raffi (9) and Myla (11). Like their mom and dad, they are adventurous and full of life. We are loving it here in the Treasure Valley, and enjoy spending our evenings and weekends outdoors soaking in all the area has to offer.
In English this year, students will be developing the skills identified for 8th grade by district and state standards. Four concept-based units are covered: Investigations, Changes, Communication, and Perspectives. Instruction focuses on reading strategies, comprehension skills, the writing process, modes of writing, writing traits, and language usage. Students will read from various genres. In short, they will be reading, writing, collaborating, listening, speaking, honing their language skills, and having some fun along the way.
In Health students will be exploring how to make independent, informed decisions concerning their physical, mental, and social well-being. Students will be developing attitudes and patterns of behavior that promote a full and satisfying life. They will also be developing their literacy skills by reading, writing, and collaborating around health topics. Many projects and class assignments will not only help them explore the content of the course, but will provide opportunities for further literacy development and at times will also include artistic and aesthetic elements. Students will demonstrate their understanding of the content via these projects and assignments, as well as exams.
I welcome parent communication. I am looking forward to partnering with parents in order to support all students. Feel free to email me with any concerns you may have. Together we can support students to be the best they can be.
