Let's make 2017-2018 a year of success and improvement!
Literacy Labs exist at MMS to provide a place where students who struggle with reading and writing can get the extra help they need to be more confident, successful readers and writers.
Our primary literacy intervention program we will use is Fast ForWord. Fast ForWord addresses several essential components of reading such as phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, comprehension, and spelling. Check out more information about this award-winning program in the Web Resources page.
Literacy Labs are a Pass/Fail course. For more information about class details, check out the class syllabus in the Class Documents page.
Reading lessons in our class will focus on comprehension strategies used by expert readers, strategies for reading more fluently, and how to get the most out of interactions with nonfiction texts. In addition, we will focus on test-taking skills in order to improve on the Idaho Standards Achievement Test (ISAT). To view practice items that are similar to the ISAT, you can click on this link.
Writing lessons in our class will give students the tools to efficiently move through the writing process of prewriting, drafting, revising, and editing. We will focus primarily on strategies to effectively summarize informational text, organize and improve expository writing, and develop self-regulation skills that expert writers possess. We will focus primarily on writing informational essays, argumentative essays, and narratives to prepare for the Idaho Standards Achievement Test (ISAT). Some of the strategies that students will learn are based on Self-Regulated Strategy Development as well. To learn more about SRSD, you can click on this link.
