Miss Jessica Gourley
Welcome to the 5th Grade Music and Band page! This is my third year teaching and third year at Pioneer. My time is split between four schools this year where I teach a variety of musical subjects and grade levels. The students and staff at this school are so inspiring- I love being at Pioneer!
This year in 5th Grade General Music, we will be taking the steps to composing and improvising music. We will use a varitey of instruments to make it possible!
In 5th Grade Band, we will learn the basic elements of our instruments and how to take care of them. Through this we learn about accountibility, responsibility, collaboration, and teamwork! We will be using our "Pioneer Learner Super Powers" by being Self-Directed, Use Strategies, be Persistent, Eager to learn, and be Risk-Takers.
As for me, I have been in love with music for as long as I can remember. From the time I was little, I have been obessed with movie music and that is what ultimately inspired me to become a musician! I started piano lessons at age 4, but it wasn't until my elementary music teacher introduced me to the band world and I have been immersed in it since. I started in 5th grade band as a clarinet player, but my life wasn't made full until I made the switch to the oboe in high school---it is my heart and soul! In my secondary education, I played the clarinet, oboe, percussion, and saxophone and piano in jazz band. I wanted to become like my band directors, so I studied to become a music teacher. I received a bachelor's degree in music education from Boise State. I played and sang in every ensemble I could! I marched euphonium in the Blue Thunder Marching Band, played piano and trombone in jazz band, sang in jazz choir, percussion ensemble, All-Campus Band, Tuba and Ephonium Ensemble, Symphonic Winds, and Symphony Orchestra. I have played oboe in community groups such as The Meridian Symphony Orchestra, Treasure Valley Concert Band, and several musicals and church services.
Outside of school I love playing and watching sports, being with family and friends, spending time outdoors, and being crafty!
I'm so excited to get to know your child this year. It will be a fun year of making music together!
