Special Education at Barbara Morgan S.T.E.M. Academy
Special Education services are designed for those qualifying students, who need specially designed instruction in the areas of Reading, Writing, and/or Math. Additionally, we provide specially designed instruction for students whose disability makes it difficult for them to access the curriculum based on behavior, social, and/or emotional needs.
At Barbara Morgan S.T.E.M. Academy, our goal is to fill gaps without creating new gaps. Simply stated, that means we want to provide support, without pulling them during core instruction. What that support looks like is unique for each identified student. Once a student has been identified as needing special education services, we attempt to work our schedule in a way that allows the student to be in the classroom as much as possible (Least Restrictive Environment, LRE). We do our best to pull students during their "Tool Time" (a specific time each day in which all students are provided intervention, practice, or enrichment), so they are not missing core instruction or STEM activities throughout the day. Sometimes, however, that is not possible and students may miss some core instruction, but as you can imagine, we do our best to avoid that, if at all possible.
Students receiving special education services at BMSA are welcome to join any after-school clubs available to their peers. They typically participate in all of the science and technology enrichment activities available to their peers during the school day as well. The only exception is if behaviors are such that additional staff is needed, in which case, a special plan must be developed prior to the student participating.
Our program at BMSA is primarily focused on students who are able to access the uniqueness of a STEM program. Each incoming student who is already receiving special education services is evaluated to determine whether or not our school can provide for their individual needs, as well as whether or not they would be able to access the instruction techniques which makes BMSA special.
