Mrs. Kendra Geary

I am so fortunate to be chosen to facilitate Gifted and Talented education at Willow Creek.  This is my 11th year teaching in West Ada, and every year has been an exciting and memorable adventure. West Ada provides so many choices for families, and opportunities for enriching students' lives during the regular school day.  No matter which school you walk into, there is a feeling of purpose, and I enjoy the opportunity to work with students, families, and teachers in so many different schools.

In my classrooms, I promote an atmosphere of academic rigor, trust, and respect.  I work hard to build a strong community among my students (even if I only have them once per week) and I emphasize group work and collaboration, both in my classroom and as I work with my teacher teammates.  I believe great things can happen when we work together!  Please do not hesitate to contact me if I can be useful to your parent-child-teacher team in helping to meet your student's needs.

A bit about me: I grew up in Boise, and attended what is now BMSA from grades K-4. I met my husband in high school and we share a love of reading, mountain hiking, and our 3 children-  Jaimeson (14), Jaycen (12), and Nora (4).  Some of my other interests are dance, (I used to dance ballet,) baking, and learning (of course!).  I am taking on a personal interest project to learn crochet with the 5th graders this Spring!  My bookshelf is crammed full with historical fiction, memoirs, children's literature, and more education books than I will ever be able to read.

I have taught grades K-4 as a public school teacher, and spent several years teaching in Montessori and Reggio Amelia preschools, where I learned a philosophy that still informs my teaching today.  Through experiences with my own children, I became interested in the gifted and talented program, took a class, which led to more classes, teaching self-contained GT, and now facilitating, which gives me more opportunities to work with students and families than ever before.

As to my educational background, I attended Lewis-Clark State College as an undergraduate where I graduated with my K-8 Education degree and a Reading Specialist certificate K-12.  Since then, I have earned a Gifted and Talented K-12 certification.  I have also attended many professional development workshops focused on educational technology use, and am always striving to grow in that area.

I believe that students have limitless potential, and I feel honored to help nurture and guide them toward its realization.  I strive to create interdisciplinary inquiry-based units, enrichment projects, real-life problem solving, technology integration, and an individualized approach to learning.  Along with my teaching partner, Alaina Huhn, our classroom is structured to foster the 6 Cs most important to 21st Century Students & Society-  Creativity, Collaboration, Critical Thinking, Communication, Citizenship, and Character.  I am looking forward to a great year!
