Culinary Arts Earns National Accreditation for Two Programs

West Ada Staff with Culinary Arts Certificates February 28, 2019 – The American Culinary Federation Education Foundation (ACFEF) Accrediting Commission Secondary Committee identified West Ada School District’s advanced culinary arts program, located in the Career and Technical Education (CTE) Center - Renaissance Campus, as “Exemplary” and granted five years of accreditation to both program focuses: Secondary Culinary Arts and Secondary Baking and Pastry.

“Having an ACF Accredited Program places us as one of the elite culinary programs, not only in our region, but also across the country,” Chef Instructor Vern Hickman boasted. “This opens up doors for the students in areas of employment, and for colleges and universities, because they can receive college credits and scholarships if they take all three levels of culinary classes offered by West Ada School District.”

To qualify as an ACFEF Exemplary Secondary Program, a program must be in full compliance with ACFEF standards on two consecutive Team Reports. West Ada School District’s culinary arts program substantially met the entire eight standards areas.

“We are one of four states in the western United States that has this accreditation. The other states are Arizona, Nevada and Washington,” Staci Low, director of CTE said.

The community can experience what culinary arts students are learning and practicing by visiting Café Renaissance, a full-service restaurant where the menu is planned, prepared and served by students. Café Renaissance is open for a few weeks each month from November through May. The restaurant is open Thursday and Friday at 11:30 a.m. on weeks it is in operation. Find themed menus on the culinary arts webpage each week Café Renaissance is open.
