Artist statement: This is piece is based on personal stories written by the dancers about a time or moment when they felt ‘out of balance.’ Using their own words, movement was developed using a process of abstraction to explore their experience in a deeper way. The dancers were challenged to incorporate their own voices into the choreography to add an additional layer of expression. The result is a very personal movement piece, with elements of dance theatre, that present the audience with a snapshot of the emotions these young women feel as teenagers, dancers, and artists.
The Repertory Dance Theatre is the nation's oldest and most successful repertory dance company. RDT presents a diverse range of modern dance styles and choreographers paired together in dynamic and unexpected performances. New viewers often ask RDT what to expect from an RDT performance. RDT tells them grace and athleticism, beauty and power. Beyond that, RDT tells them to embrace the unexpected. So, what is RDT Dance all about? Simply said, RDT is about art. Art in motion, expressed through our bodies as modern dance. Art that in its immediacy and intimacy can be both thrilling and profound. Art that challenges you, and art that you won't see coming. For 50 years, RDT has pushed the boundaries of modern dance, while preserving and celebrating its legacy. It was radical when Utah modern dancers beat out the big city stalwarts to receive a Rockefeller grant establishing RDT as the nation’s first repertory dance company in 1966.
