Students have trouble focusing in classes, especially English where concepts in English can be abstract. For example, the English Curriculum asks students to analyze how a person's values determine what risks they are willing to take. Their lack of focus could impede their ability to fully grasp the lessons taught through literature. Part of this problem could be due to the fact that students spend the majority of their day seated in desks. Our school has four 90 minute classes each day. If students remain seated for each of those, that is 6 hours of sitting still. High-stakes testing in language has also taken a toll on a student's anxiety. Students now stress over producing the "correct" response rather than learning how to respond. Standing would help stress, anxiety and focus.
