Week of November 29, 2021
I hope you all know how thankful I am for you. Your support at home makes such a difference to what I do here at school. I feel incredibly lucky to spend my days with your children. I hope your break is filled with rest, relaxation, and fun!
When we return, we will hit the ground running for our three-week stretch until Winter Break. This is a jam-packed time of year for everyone, and it's the same here at school. It is very important that your child is here at school as much as possible, because they miss out on valuable pieces of instruction when they are gone that are impossible to make up in total.
In reading, we will read Click, Clack, Moo: Cows That Type by Doreen Cronin to help us learn the skills below. Our focus is on drawing conclusions by using the pictures and reading in between the lines. You can practice at home by reading picture books and discussing what information you would miss without the pictures.
Our spelling pattern is plural nouns that end in -s and -es. This is another great one for sorting so kids can see when they will need to add an -es at the end to make it plural. Go on a plural noun hunt in the book you're reading and have them tell you what the base word would be! (ex: dresses -> dress)
We will also begin our big Winter Writing Project. Students will write three opinion paragraphs over the next three weeks. We are building on what we've done and adding the element of supporting evidence to help support their reasons/details.
In math, we will be finishing up our module on place value and moving into our module on adding and subtracting using the models we've been making. If your child is really struggling at home, encourage them to draw hundreds, tens, and ones on a place value chart. For extra support, we use blocks similar to these in class to physically make numbers and trade as we begin addition and subtraction with regrouping.
Upcoming Dates and Reminders:
