Air Quality Monitoring: Guidelines for Outdoor Activities & Events

West Ada School District

To monitor air quality, West Ada School District uses the Real-Time Air Monitoring Station labeled Meridian, which is located at Rocky Mountain High School to determine the Air Quality Index (AQI).

DISTRICT GUIDELINES BY AQI LEVEL

YELLOW AQI (51-100)

Air quality is acceptable for outdoor activities.

ORANGE AQI (101-150)

  • Modifications to outdoor activities may be necessary, including limiting the

    intensity or duration of activity.

  • It may be necessary to restrict participation for students with asthma or other

    respiratory conditions.

RED AQI (151+)

All outdoor activities and events will be canceled or relocated indoors when possible.


MONITORING & COMMUNICATION TIMELINE

Ongoing Monitoring

  • Air quality is monitored throughout the day, and conditions can change rapidly. The district

    will continue to monitor AQI readings leading up to all scheduled after-school activities.

Middle School Extracurricular Activities

  • Our goal is to communicate any cancellations, postponements, or relocations by 2:00 p.m.

    whenever possible.

High School Extracurricular Activities

  • Because most high school events begin later in the day, a decision may be delayed beyond

    2:00 p.m. so the most current AQI information can be used before determining whether

    activities can safely proceed.

Our priority is student and staff safety. While we understand families appreciate as much advance notice as possible, waiting longer for high school decisions may provide an opportunity for improving air quality and allow activities to take place.
