Sports Medicine

Sports Medicine Program

Start your sophomore year!  Gain knowledge and demonstrate skills used in most Athletic Training settings. The Sports Medicine courses are part of the Rehabilitation Services Pathway that prepares students with hands on learning and clinical experience.

What can you expect in a Sports Medicine Course?

Throughout the Sports Medicine pathway, students will gain knowledge of health science careers, medical terminology, systems of the body, and simple injuries that occur in the active population.

Students will develop and demonstrate skills that are used in most athletic training settings by passing competencies in taping, wrapping, splinting, bracing, stretching, modality application, simple rehabilitation plans for common athletic injuries, medical documentation, and emergency action plans. Students will have the opportunity to get certified in Basic Life Support and Heart Saver First Aid.

Students who complete the Sports Medicine courses are not only well rehearsed in the skills they learned but are better equipped to handle themselves in a stressful situation, work as a team and communicate effectively. Their clinical experience prepares them for patient centered care.

"As a wrestling coach I can't overstate the help we get from our sports med students during practice and meets. They are our first line of defense in observing various ailments and helping get our athletes the care they need and back on the mat as soon as possible under the supervision of the athletic trainer.”
