Celebrating 75 Years of Learning, Growing and Leading in West Ada
Established in 1950, the West Ada School District proudly celebrates 75 years of service to the children and families of our growing community. From its rural beginnings in the farmlands of Meridian, Eagle, and Star, to becoming Idaho’s largest and most dynamic public school district, West Ada has evolved into a vibrant learning community committed to empowering the next generation.
Our story began as part of a sweeping reorganization of Idaho’s education system following the 1945 legislative initiative to consolidate the state’s 1,082 school districts. By 1950, this plan resulted in just 301 school districts—including ours. The formation of our district brought together all or part of thirty-three smaller districts surrounding the communities of Meridian, Eagle, and Star, setting the foundation for a shared commitment to educational excellence.
In our early years, we were officially known as Class A School District No. 2 (1950–1952). When land in Canyon County—formerly part of Roosevelt District No. 41—was added, the name changed to Joint Class A School District No. 2, a designation that lasted until 1963. On July 1, 1963, the district became known as Joint School District No. 2—a name that reflected our collaborative and inclusive mission across multiple communities.
Though long referred to informally as the Meridian School District, the board formally embraced a new chapter in June 2014, voting to adopt the name West Ada School District. This change honored the district’s broad reach across Boise, Eagle, Garden City, Kuna, Meridian, and Star, reaffirming our dedication to serving each and every student, regardless of ZIP code.
Throughout our history, we've taken great pride in our role as a driving force for opportunity and innovation. As our community transitioned from farmland to suburbia, we grew alongside it—building schools, expanding programs, and embracing technology to meet the needs of a rapidly changing world.
As we honor our past and look boldly toward the future, we extend our heartfelt thanks to the educators, administrators, staff, students, families, and community members who have been—and continue to be—the heart of our district.
Together, we celebrate not only 75 years of excellence but also the limitless potential that lies ahead.
