Dear West Ada Families and Community,
I want to share some personal news with you.
Last week, I was diagnosed with cancer and will begin treatment immediately. I feel extremely fortunate that it was caught very early, and I’m expected to make a full recovery.
Like many of you, cancer has touched our lives through family members, friends, and colleagues. This diagnosis came as a shock, but I am approaching it the same way I approach every challenge—with determination and optimism.
My plan is to continue working throughout treatment. There will be times when appointments may affect my availability, but I have complete confidence in our Executive Team and school principals. They are experienced leaders who are fully prepared to provide guidance and make decisions.
Most importantly, I want to reassure you that our focus on students will not change. The most important work in West Ada happens in our classrooms, and student success is driven every day by the dedication of our teachers, support staff, and school leaders. That work will not miss a beat. As always, our commitment remains to provide every student with a safe, supportive, and successful learning environment.
Thank you for your continued support of West Ada School District, our schools, and the students we serve. West Ada may be a large district, but we are also a community. The support, encouragement, and kindness I have already received give me strength as I begin this journey.
I will share updates when appropriate, but I also appreciate your understanding that there are some aspects of my treatment and recovery that I would like to keep private.
Thank you for your thoughts and prayers for me and my family. They mean more than I can express.
With gratitude,
Dr. Derek Bub
Superintendent
